Miami declares top scorer Durand Scott ineligible

Associated Press  |  Last updated March 09, 2012
Miami guard Durand Scott, the Hurricanes' leading scorer, did not play in Friday night's ACC tournament game against Florida State. Miami announced before the game it had declared Scott ineligible for receiving impermissible benefits. It is seeking Scott's reinstatement from the NCAA. The school did not disclose further details in a statement. Sophomore Rion Brown is starting for Scott against Florida State. Scott, who had 11 points in Miami's win over Georgia Tech on Thursday night, leads the team with his average of 12.9 points per game. It is the second time in the last three weeks a Miami basketball player has had to petition for his reinstatement. Hurricanes center Reggie Johnson was recently reinstated after an investigation revealed that members of his family accepted ''impermissible travel benefits'' from a member of the school's former coaching staff. The university said Johnson was not aware of the benefits, personally accepted nothing and that his family had been told they were allowed. The NCAA told Miami that Johnson ''must repay the value of benefits that were unknowingly received from a member of the former coaching staff'' and sit out one game. Johnson satisfied the second of those requirements by missing Miami's win over then-No. 15 Florida State on Sunday night. The NCAA and Miami have worked together in a joint investigation of the Hurricanes' compliance practices since last year, that inquiry largely revolving around the claims former booster Nevin Shapiro - now a convicted Ponzi scheme architect serving a 20-year sentence in federal prison for masterminding a $930 million scam - made in an article published by Yahoo Sports.
