The early signing period for the 2013 basketball class was this week and Michigan Basketball reeled in a Top 10 class with 3 Top 100 recruits. John Beilein and his staff continue to impress on the recruiting trail with their eye for not only talent, but also for high character young men. ESPNU ranks Michigan’s class #8 overall and #2 in the Big Ten, behind Indiana. Here are the 3 members of Michigan’s 2013 class, all of whom signed their letter of intent this week. IT’S OFFICIAL! I have finally signed my letter of intent to attend the University of Michigan next year! I t instagr.am/p/SBQkZzDw4b/ — Zak Irvin (@zirvin21) November 14, 2012 Zak Irvin: The 6-foot-6, 185 pounder from Fishers, Indiana is ranked the #5 small forward by ESPNU and the #24 player overall. Here is an excerpt of his scouting report on ESPNU: Zak is an aggressive scorer with high skill and excellent athletic ability. With terrific small forward size he knocks down three point shots with consistency on the break or coming off screening action in the half court. When he puts the ball on the floor he can get all the way to the rim and score or find an open player. Here’s what John Beilein told Sam Webb on WTKA about Irvin: ”He’s a multi-skill player like we like to have, 6-6, 6-7, loves to lock people up on defense, shoots it extremely well — really the type of young man that does so many things so well. He’ll be a tough matchup for (opponents) and we really like having those guys on our team.” Officially a Wolverine now! — Derrick Walton (@DerrickWalton10) November 16, 2012 Zak Irvin (on the left) and Derrick Walton Derrick Walton: The 6-foot, 170 pounder from Detroit, Michigan is ranked the #5 point guard by ESPNU and the #35 player overall. Here is an excerpt of his scouting report on ESPNU: Walton is a true point guard that has an excellent feel for the game. He has a tight handle and pushes the ball up the floor on makes or misses. He does a great job of keeping pressure on the defense especially on the break. Walton plays with great pace and moves down the floor with a high but under control speed dribble in which he can change speed and directions on a dime. Walton does a good job of finding teammates but can score as well. Walton is terrific in the open court with his ability to pass and get to the rim. Walton can make mid range pull ups and open threes with time and space when in rhythm. Here’s what John Beilein said about Walton in a press release on Friday: ”Derrick’s excellent point guard skills and natural leadership will make him a great addition to our roster,” said Beilein. “His outstanding court sense tells him when to pass or score. He sees the floor extremely well on both offense and defense. His teammates will love playing with him because of his team-first attitude.” I had trouble embedding Donnal’s signing day tweet, you can view it here: Mark Donnal tweet Mark Donnal: The 6-foot-9, 200 pounder out of Whitehouse, Ohio is ranked the #24 power forward by ESPNU and the #99 player overall. Here is an excerpt of his scouting report on ESPNU: Mark is an ever-improving big man in the 2013 class. He has good hands and good feet. He is a solid athlete that can play above the rim. He has developed a solid face-up jumpshot out to 17 feet which has really helped expand his game. He is a good rebounder and uses his big body well inside. Here’s what John Beilein told Sam Webb on WTKA about Donnal: ”(Bacari Alexander) has talked about like a (Bill) Laimbeer type of game where he can really step out and shoot, but he’s physical enough to play inside. We love the skill set he brings.”
