Sunday may feel like old times for Minnesota's Tubby Smith and Florida's Billy Donovan. They certainly are familiar with each other. The two coaches have three national championships between them and a history of intense head-to-head competition in the Southeastern Conference dating to the late 1990s when Smith was at Georgia and Kentucky and Donovan started at Florida. They'll renew the rivalry for one game when Donovan's Gators (27-7), the No. 3 seed in the NCAA tournament South Regional, face Smith's No. 11 Gophers (21-12). The winner advances to the round of 16. Smith, who left Kentucky for Minnesota in 2007, said he's glad to see Donovan again because it means he's got his team playing at a high level. The Gophers' 83-63 win Friday night over UCLA was his first NCAA tournament victory in six years at Minnesota. The Gators are a perennial national power. ''We have had our battles,'' Smith said Saturday. ''If you're ...

Tubby, Donovan to meet again for round of 16 berth

Minnesota coach Tubby Smith knows his next opponent all too well. Six years after their last meeting in the Southeastern Conference, when Smith was still at Kentucky, he will coach against Florida's Billy Donovan again - this time in the Lone Star State with a trip to the NCAA tournament's round of 16 on the line. ''I'm pretty familiar with Billy Donovan,'...

Donovan Talks Wednesday

Florida head coach Billy Donovan talks to the national media as his Gators prepare for their first game of the NCAA Tournament against northwestern State. The third seeded Gators are coming off of two straight Elite-Eight appearances and his squad may have something to prove after a very good season but rough finish to the regular season and SEC tournament.

Florida Gators vs. Minnesota Golden Gophers: Not Time to Look Ahead

The Florida Gators made it to the third round of the 2013 NCAA Tournament with little resistance. They arrive in that round facing a Minnesota Golden Gophers team they can’t look past. The Sweet Sixteen is within reach, but it’s not guaranteed; just ask Gonzaga and St. Louis. Billy Donovan faces a familiar foe in Minnesota head coach Tubby Smith. Three Hits: Sluggish Gators advance to Round of 32

Who would have thought the Gators could beat Northwestern State by 32 and not be the most famous Florida-based team of the NCAA tournament? Of course, the new Cinderella darling is Florida Gulf Coach University, the fast-paced 15-seed that upset Georgetown in its first-ever tournament appearance. Things were a lot more predictable in Austin, where Billy Donovan's Florida squad...

And as the Gators opened a huge lead...

The Florida Gators Will

The title isn’t a mistake. I didn’t forget to go back and fill in my thoughts once I was done with the post. I really don’t know. You don’t know. The experts don’t know. President Obama doesn’t know. I’m basically trying to tell you that no one knows where the Florida Gators will exit the 2013 NCAA Tournament. We’re all guessing based on what we’ve seen over the...

Gators need Rosario's best to make Final Four

AUSTIN, Texas The Gators need Mike Rosario if they are going to reach the Final Four and have a shot at a national championship. But they need the good Rosario, not the bad Rosario that sometimes drifts into his own world and causes Florida coach Billy Donovan to wonder if he is dealing with an imposter in a No. 3 jersey. "There's times where he can be a little carefree...
