Syracuse head basketball coach Jim Boeheim has launched an astonishing assault against ESPN college basketball reporter Andy Katz Wednesday night.  At Boeheim's press conference after the #6 Orange were upset by Connecticut, Katz asked the coach a question about the Syracuse-UConn series and Boeheim responded by saying he wasn't going to answer it.  He also included these choice words about Katz recorded by WAER: "I'll answer anyone's question but yours because you're an idiot and really a disloyal person.  And a few other things I can add, but I'm not gonna go there." Let me pick up mouth on the floor!  That's an attack you will rarely ever see from a coach to a well-known national reporter... and seemingly out of the blue as well.  Although Boeheim may still hold a grudge against ESPN and Katz for reporting that goes all the way back to the Bernie Fine case, it's more likely Katz's recent reporting on ineligible Orange player James Southerland is the crux of the issue.  Katz shared specifics about Southerland's academic eligibility during Wednesday night's game.  Larry Brown Sports notes Fox's Peter Schrager says that's why Boeheim called Katz "disloyal"... I'm told by "in the know" sources that Katz irked Boeheim by sharing info JB believed was off the record on the air re: James Southerland. — P. Schrager (@PSchrags) February 14, 2013 Katz had this response in the press room according to WAER: .@espnandykatz response to the press room crowd: last time I checked I wasn't getting paid by Syracuse U — WAER Sports (@WAERSports) February 14, 2013 This controversy is a bit trickier of a situation than initially meets the eye.  If Katz was told that information about Southerland confidentially by Boeheim, you can understand why the coach would be upset.  That said, Katz's checks are written by ESPN, not Syracuse, and certainly not Boeheim.  To launch such an outlandish personal attack on Katz from his bully pulpit isn't a good look for the Syracuse coach, and it's far from the first time Boeheim has overstepped with little class in this manner.  College coaches have enough of a problem with insane, egotistical power trips as it is without trying to intimidate and bully members of the media. It's a complex situation and one likely involving Katz's sources, which means we'll probably never know the full story.  However, at the end of the day Andy Katz's loyalty lies with his reporting and ESPN.  Not Jim Boeheim.

  • so he takes a shot at a scribbler/mumbler...so fekkin what...those under the lights catch the rocks all the time, what's so holy about the media they can't take a salvo now and then, look who's crying for him, other scribblers,,,grow up
  • The Press deserves what they get from BOOHIME because he is not able to sit down without having the Press's liplock on his butt. Last month he was interviewed and quoted by the Press for his thoughts and opinion on gun control. When BOOHIME's own Sandusky story surfaced; The Press did nothing compared to the efforts you put forth to unveil the truth. Stop whining and become real reporters instead of a bunch of spineless liplocks with no balls!

  • where are the comments
  • As a reporter you better have some ethics or these coaches will kick you to the curb. If it was off the record Katz should have kept his piehole shut. That is burning bridges my friend but than again I feel most reporters are bottom feeders.
  • Love JB All he does is get the most out of his players.
  • Who is Andy Katz???
  • YES! The press is a joke and Katz especially,
  • Go get him Jim,reporters and newscasters are just talking heads with no real skills. It's time to give it back to them. Don't be afraid to go after them. You have worked your butt off and accomplished great things.Thanks.
  • I love how you are all ripping repoters but look where you are. Right here reading what they report. You are a bunch of hypocrites. If you dont like thier reporting dont read the news, stay off the websites and shut the hell up.
  • Only a REPORTER would say that...TROLL!!!!!!
  • you shut the hell up andy
  • I love coach when he protects his student athletes. The media tried to attack Derrick Coleman as well and coach defended him like he was his own child. The media have to remember that these are children and a lot of them come from stressed backgrounds and is thrown in the Lions Den (media/publics eye) at a very young age and the public (consumers) expect these children to perform socially like seasoned adults. It takes a while to make the adjustment if the adjustment is made at all. The public & media is the crux to all of our athletes that we enjoy because we creat the monsters they become. Enjoy the damn sport and leave their personal life out of it. Katz is an idiot. I met Sutherland and this is one of the nicest kids you would ever want to meet. These kids showed me a lot of respect , both basketball and football and we need to cut them some slack.
  • JB is a Blowhard !!! He shows it everytime he opens his big mouth !! Every year he has kids get into eligebility problems with their grades So He is not on top of That Part of there College expeience..Lets Be honest these guys aren't taking Pre Med !! He should b3e in constant contact with professors if His Players! And if they are having problems and remedy it with extra help..They go to college to get a degree not jusp play basketball and try to make JB look Good !!
  • So, you must think SU os the only school to have this issue?? JB is only the 2nd best college hoops coach of ALL TIME!!! You should keep your SEXUAL preferences to yourself!!!!!!
  • eligebility problems
That Part of there College expeience
    Lets Be honest
    with professors if His Players
    not jusp play basketball
    ------------
Maybe you should have been on top of YOUR college "expeience." Is this even English?
  • Come on Andy ur the blowhard always wanting to start some controversy so you can have something to write.
  • The author of this article must not remember 2006, when Coach JB ripped an opposing assistant coach a new one in postgame conference (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sn3kPBww2w0&playnext=1&list=PLB121D0F72D868BA7&feature=results_video, if the link doesn't work just search on "Jim Boeheim uncensored," and turn down the sound or use earbuds if you're in the office, because it's NSFW). Coach JB has won over 900 games, has the ring and the cut-down net, is in the Hall of Fame, earns millions with much less talent than Coach K, Coach Cal or any of a number of his colleagues, has a beautiful wife, beautiful children, and, at age 68, doesn't really give a **** about what anyone else thinks.
  • The PRESS will always back the PRESS, even when they are wrong. The PRESS ran out Bernie FIne and never reported on their failings. Katz took off the record info and put it on air, all in the name of his paycheck. He has no journalistic credibility. I would never give this guy the time of day if I were a coach or player. In fact,I'd never talk to any of them,
  • Katz, I believe, is an SU graduate and I'm sure has used that to get inside information. He has not been a friend of SU since he has been at ESPN. I'm not sure why any coach feels the need to give anythng to these media divas.
  • The cheater is taking the heat and striking out at the reporter. How many "student" athletes does he have in his program.
  • I don't know why people keep giving info to reporters and expect it to not get reported. Knowledge is power and reporters are just gossip mongers on a power trip.
  • "Off the record" means just that. If Katz reports something he was told in confidence, he broke a trust that he probably won't get back. I don't care who writes his check, he can't be trusted.
  • Who the hell wrote this story? This is some pimply face noob blogger sucking up to Katz.
  • Come on! When did this country believe that the media is anything but a fringe benefit to sports regardless of how much money they pour into the system? It's getting old that the media believe they are above or privledged compared to the game, coaches, schools, owners, and players. They are reporters, not children who deserve to be handled like babies. Reporting should be a career of hard knocks. Only a very view, if any, should have equal rights to those directly involved. No doubt coaches, especially after losing, even Boeheim whose been around forever, get edgy now and again and say the wrong thing at the wrong time. But I guarentee poor little Andy Katz said something he should never have. Reporter for elite ESPN or not, they should treat players and coaches with respect... ALWAYS.
  • Totally unprofessiional.
  • "College coaches have enough of a problem with insane, egotistical power trips as it is without trying to intimidate and bully members of the media like Jim Boeheim." This pretty much sums it up. There is a good percentage of coaches who are normal, steady individuals. Then there is a certain segment whose "authority" and salary give them a megalomaniac personality. Boeheim is one of those who feels his words should not be be questioned. I bet anything he apologizes to Katz before the day is over.
  • When I see Jim Boeheim on TV he should have a diaper on and a bottle in his mouth. He is always crying to the Ref about everthing. When is he going to retire!!!!!
  • What a cry baby! Get it over pal, talk happens in sports and it's not alway's what you want to hear. If you can't handle the talk then you need to get out of sports. Maybe you would be better suited for a childs basketball team.
  • fox and espn SUCKS! give'm hell boeheim.
  • Sports news has become "tabloid" crap - Siccum Coach
  • Most sports reporters are full of themselves, if they knew half of what they want the listener/viewer to think they know, wouldn't they be somewhere actually coaching instead of trying to sensationalize somthing about a coach, player or team seemingly for his own agrandizement !
  • I'm an SU fan. I think Boeheim's great. I watched the game and heard Katz's comments about Southerland.

This may be a misunderstanding. JB was apparently told about Katz mentioning what he learned about the suspension and was understandably steamed at an apparent breach of confidence on a sensitive subject. But when JB has time to sit down and listen to what Katz actually said, he may change his mind in light of two things. First, Katz reported a conversation he had directly w/ Southerland, not some off-the-record backgrounder from SU staff. Second, the gist of the story was that Southerland was totally innocent and now cleared of the suspected wrongdoing. Katz didn't say anything that made either SU or Southerland look bad; the blame was directed toward an overly paranoid NCAA. I doubt that JB would disagree.
  • take any sports figure in the limelight,,,he's going to face a barrage of questions and as reporters work to get the skinny, they may tick a guy off,,,the coach or player goes back to the game,,,the reporter,,,he just reloads,,,all in a days work,,,you gotta take it when you're out to give it.
  • I heard Andy Katz on Mike and Mike this morning and he sounded like your typical media weasel. In other words, its really all about him and he will do anything to attract attention. If he can get that attention by violating JB's trust on the Southerland issue, so be it. Not a Syracuse fan but I will never take the side of a media tool over someone who is in the arena.
