Nelson leads Oregon State past Portland 79-73

Associated Press  |  Last updated November 14, 2013
Roberto Nelson scored 24 points and tied a career high with seven assists as Oregon State beat Portland 79-73 Wednesday night. Angus Brandt added 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Beavers (1-1), and Devon Collier had 11 points and 11 rebounds. Ryan Nicholas had 14 points and 13 rebounds for the Pilots (1-1), but shot 5 of 16 from the field. Bobby Sharp, a junior college transfer, came off the bench and added 18 points for Portland, making five 3-pointers. The Beavers scored 11 straight points in the first half to take a 20-10 lead. Brandt had five points during the run. Oregon State led 41-33 at halftime, but the Pilots tied the game 59-59 on a layup by Thomas van der Mars with 7:50 left. The Beavers built a lead of seven points on a Nelson 3-pointer with 2:20 left and were able to hold off the visitors. Oregon State lost 78-73 to Coppin State in its season opener at home on Sunday. Nelson led the Beavers in that game with a career-high 36 points. He has now scored in double digits in 19 straight games. Collier started for the Beavers after serving out a suspension for a violation of team rules. He missed the team's two exhibition games and its season opener. The 6-foot-7 forward averaged 12.6 points and six rebounds last season. Forward Eric Moreland did not play for the Beavers, suspended for the first 14 games of the regular season for a violation of team rules. Moreland finished second in the Pac-12 in rebounding, blocked shots and double-doubles last season. Coach Craig Robinson has not elaborated on the reasons for Collier's and Moreland's suspensions. Portland returns all five starters from last year, and six of their seven top scorers. Nicholas is the team's two-time leading scorer and rebounder. Portland beat UC Davis 100-83 on Friday at home. Oregon State plays at Maryland on Sunday. The two teams have never faced each other. The Pilots face Michigan State on Monday.
