For Northwestern and Bill Carmody today conjures up images of breakup songs. Northwestern Athletic Director Jim Phillips met with the NU players this morning and will address the media at 5:30 tonight.  (The announcement of the press conference was made about 25 minutes. Multiple sources are reporting Carmody is out. Word is Duke Blue Devils assistant Chris Collins is the top choice of the A.D. in finding Carmody’s replacement A good breakup song for this situation is Death Cab for Cutie’s “The Ice is Getting Thinner.   The seasons have changed and so have we. There was little we could say, and even less we could do Or then there’s the final conversation Carmody had with Phillips, which makes me think of another great break-up song, No Doubt’s “Don’t Speak.” Don’t speak I know just what you’re saying So please stop explaining Don’t tell me cause it hurts Don’t speak I know what you’re thinking I don’t need your reasons Don’t tell me cause it hurts Some of the main reasons Carmody was let go. -Losing to PSU is a really big deal; especially at home. Penn State was 0-17 on the road under Patrick Chambers entering this game. Yes, this was indeed his first road win at Penn State. And Chambers got the job because the guy before him, Ed DeChellis, left Penn State for Navy. Yes, he left PSU FOR NAVY, not vice versa, that’s what PSU hoops really is. And with the victory, Penn State improved to 11-9 all-time at Northwestern. -Carmody had a golden chance to make the big dance last year and blew it. Entering the Big Ten Tournament, the Gophers RPI was 90, NU 47. In that tournament, Minnesota was a #10 seed, Northwestern a #7. As we all recall, NU lost as a favorite in OT.  Northwestern was a consensus “last four in” according to most bracketologists at the time. A win would have solidified their case AND given them another game to play. And winning that second one would have locked up a bid. Carmody said he told his players before that game: “if you win tonight, it doesn’t mean you’re in, if you lose it doesn’t mean you’re out.” -After the loss Carmody said: “Doesn’t mean anything either way. We’ll put our resume out there and see how it goes…well, we will practice on Sunday, that I know. It’s a body of work. And a few years ago, they said the last 10 games used to be something that if you were on a hot streak, that was more important than playing December games, but now they say it’s not true.” His public comments made it seem like he didn’t truly approach that situation with more gravity. And was kind of flippant. -Attendance is very poor; especially among the students. -No coach, even Carmody, can sustain 25+ win seasons with NCAA Tournament wins year after year running the Princeton offense and 1-3-1 zone on defense. It’s a gimmicky lost art. Paul M. Banks is CEO of The Sports Bank.net, a Google News site generating millions of visitors.
