Oklahoma Transfer Guard Receiving Interest From High-Major Programs

The Oklahoma Sooners have been impacted heavily by the transfer portal for yet another offseason. In all fairness to Porter Moser and the Sooners — the entire sport of college basketball dealing with this issue, not just Oklahoma. However, the Sooners are going to have to combat that and bring in another entire new group.

Between graduation and losing four outgoing transfers, the Sooners have lost nearly every impact player from last season — with exception to Jalon Moore and Sam Godwin. The most painful of those losses might just be Javian McCollum, the Sooners’ breakout guard from this past season. Having elite guard play is a recipe to success when March rolls around, and now Oklahoma is going to have to replace McCollum’s impact and potential to help the team down the late-season stretch.

Recently, a list was revealed with each of the programs that have shown interest in bringing in McCollum. Kentucky, Georgia Tech, West Virginia, USC, Vanderbilt, VCU, Georgia, Texas A&M, Michigan and Florida are each of the programs to have shown interest, according to The Portal Report.

Evidently, McCollum’s play in Norman has led to him being looked at by some high-major programs. The list of programs shows that there is real interest in the way McCollum can be the engine of an offense. As mentioned, guard play is super important in March, and McCollum is capable of leading an offense in a big way.

Sooners thin at guard depth

McCollum is one of three perimeter players to hit the transfer portal, joining Otega Oweh and Milos Uzan. While the Sooners have yet to replace their impacts with incoming transfers, some commitments are expected in the near future from some big targets. While they also need to bring in more big men, addressing guard play should be Oklahoma’s top priority.

Incoming freshman Dayton Forsythe is going to provide an impact at the guard position, but scoring and a veteran presence should both be brought in from the portal if Moser is capable of doing so.
