OSU Basketball: Former Cowboys in the Postseason

Oklahoma State missed out on postseason play, but a few former Cowboys are still playing.

With the transfer portal and NIL running college athletics now, players are free to go where they please, basically whenever they please. Although it has not always been perfect, it has allowed players to find a situation best for them. With OSU’s season ending after the Big 12 Tournament, a few former OSU players are still on the floor.

Former Cowboys in the postseason:

Avery Anderson III, TCU:

The Cowboys’ former star guard is the only player in the NCAA Tournament who played in Stillwater. With the Horned Frogs, Anderson averaged 7.8 points and 3.3 assists this season as he helped them to a 21-12 record and a 9 seed.

Before going to TCU, Anderson played four seasons at OSU, averaging 9.7 points and 1.4 steals across 109 games.

Kalib and Keylan Boone, UNLV:

The Boone twins reunited at UNLV this season and helped their team to the NIT after spending their first three seasons together in Stillwater. After the 2022 season, Keylan Boone transferred to Pacific after playing 80 games at OSU.

Keylan Boone never saw consistent playing time at OSU but has thrived at Pacific and UNLV. Including this season with the Rebels, he has averaged 13.2 points and 5.3 rebounds over the past two seasons.

Meanwhile, Kalib Boone stayed in Stillwater for a fourth season before making the move to UNLV this season. In 123 games with OSU, he averaged 7.8 points and four rebounds and has had a successful season in Vegas.

Rondel Walker, North Texas:

Although he played well alongside Anderson and the Boone twins at OSU, Walker has had a rough time since leaving Stillwater. After playing in 59 games for the Cowboys in two seasons, Walker played only 12 minutes per game for TCU in 2022-23 and has played only 20 games for North Texas this season.

Averaging only four points, Walker has been in and out of the regular rotation for the Mean Green.

Tyreek Smith, SMU:

After two seasons with the Cowboys, Smith is in his third stop and having his best season yet. With the Mustangs this season, Smith is averaging career-highs of 8.1 points, 5.6 rebounds and 1.7 blocks.

Before making the NIT with SMU, Smith played 66 games with OSU and was a solid backup big for Mike Boynton’s team.

Next game: Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Indiana State

Matthew-Alexander Moncrieffe, Georgia:

After a promising freshman season in Stillwater, Moncrieffe’s career has not quite panned out. In 2021, he averaged nine points and 5.3 rebounds while starting 14 of his 28 games on the Cowboys’ NCAA Tournament team. However, his numbers dropped significantly in year two before he transferred to Georgia, where he has not found his footing.

Moncrieffe is on the Bulldogs’ NIT squad but has not made much of an impact. In 14 games, Moncrieffe has averaged only 8.4 minutes and has not had much going for him.

Next game: March 23/24 vs. winner of Wake Forest/App State

Although OSU is not in the postseason this year, there is still plenty of action for those who used to play in Gallagher-Iba Arena.
