Last year Rick Pitino was selected as a finalist to get the nod into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame and was turned away by the committee.  This year he has been selected as a finalist again and hopes to get in on round 2. Pitino was the first coach in the NCAA to take 3 different teams to the Final Four (Providence, Kentucky, Louisville).  When you look at Pitino’s stats they really are remarkable.  In 21 of his 28 seasons as a college basketball head coach, he has lead his team to 20 or more victories.  Many say that if he didn’t make the jump to the NBA in the middle of his prime that he would up there with Coach K for the all time wins crown.  Pitino’s win total isn’t that bad though as he goes for his 650th win this Sunday in South Florida. Whether you like Pitino or not, he changed the game of basketball as we know it today.  He was really the first coach to press almost all game and put defensive pressure on the opponent at all times.  If Pitino doesn’t get into the Hall of Fame this time than I will be stunned.  Even though many people around the Commonwealth don’t like him, there is no denying that he is one heck of a basketball coach.
