Fox Sports Florida:
GAINESVILLE, Fla. Gators coach Billy Donovan wasn't sure what to expect on Saturday in Florida's first game without junior forward Will Yeguete, who underwent knee surgery Friday and is expected to be lost for the rest of the regular season.
The one thing Donovan knew for certain was that the Gators needed someone to step up and help fill the void left by Yeguete. Yeguete provides Florida with consistent energy and enthusiasm. He is also one of the team's best defensive players.
The good news for Donovan on Saturday was that two role players -- not just one -- turned in solid efforts in Florida's 83-58 win over Mississippi State.
Junior forward Casey Prather came off the bench and scored a season-high 12 points and added five rebounds, one steal and a block in a season-high 22 minutes.
Meanwhile, freshman guard Michael Frazier earned his first career start when Donovan elected to start Kenny Boynton at point guard over regular Scottie Wilbekin. That meant Frazie...
BEST OF MAXIM
Florida head coach Billy Donovan said Thursday that Casey Prather still wasn’t comfortable after returning from a high ankle sprain. He was timid in practice and tentative with the ball instead of the aggressive player that was creating a role for himself before the injury. A conversation with athletic trainer Duke Werner before Saturday’s game against Mississippi State changed that.
The Gators say they’ve learned their lesson, and they have a chance to prove it on Saturday. No. 2 Florida went to Fayetteville on Tuesday and gave up a season-high 80 points while dropping its first conference game of the season. Head coach Billy Donovan was upset with their lack of focus, and while the team says they won’t take anyone else lightly, they can prove it in the...
The Will Muschamp era for the Florida Gators has been a rather quiet one for the most part. His first season was a bit rough, not quite reaching the lofty standards of the goals set in Gainesville, but 2012 was a bit of a turnaround. The team finished the regular season 11-1, putting them back in a BCS Bowl. Of course, that didn’t go nearly as well as Swamp faithful had hoped,...
The Gators went through their final extended scrimmage of the preseason on Sunday night. After practicing mostly during the day, Florida pushed it back to a night scrimmage so the team could get used to the lights. Five pitchers still competing for important roles in the starting rotation and the bullpen were on the mound Sunday.
Florida head coach Billy Donovan was hoping it would go this way. He removed point guard Scottie Wilbekin from the starting lineup on Saturday because he didn’t like where the junior’s head was. It served as an opportunity to refocus. Wilbekin has always been a player that takes the court with a chip on his shoulder. After a down performance at Arkansas, he didn’t have that chip anymore.
GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- No. 2 Florida played without forward Will Yeguete, benched starting point guard Scottie Wilbekin and got an injury scare from Erik Murphy. It didn't matter against Mississippi State.
The Gators entered the O'Connell Center bearing the chip of the Arkansas upset paired with the blow of a Will Yeguete absence. However, Florida bounced back to continue its undefeated streak at home in an 83-58 win over Mississippi State. Players Michael Frazier II (who registered his first start), Kenny Boynton, Casey Prather and Mike Rosario discuss their victory and the upcoming...
