Georgia Tech started the Brian Gregory era without one of its key pieces, as Glen Rice, the team's leading returning scorer and rebounder, was suspended by Gregory for the team's first three games of the 2011-12 season for a violation of team rules. The suspension was announced less than an hour before tip-off of the season opener against Florida A&M, a 92-59 Yellow Jackets victory. "It was just a team violation," said Gregory after game. "Guys are learning that there are consequences but there is also going to be growth. We're here to help him grow through this and him move on from there." The 6-5 junior guard, who led the 2010-11 team with 42 three-point field goals and 58 offensive rebounds and was second with 12.8 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 28.5 minutes per game, was with the team at the Arena at Gwinnett but in street clothes. He was visible, exhorting the team on during warm-ups, chest-bumping the starters during starting lineup introductions and was seated on the bench. Gregory denied there is any kind of attitude problem with Rice, if anything it's the opposite. "I think he's grown a lot in the six months that I've been here," he said. "He's not perfect. So a mistake was made and we need to grow from that. I do like the progress, not only him, but Point A to right now, Point B, I do like the direction and we're not close to where we're going to get to but I do think we're moving forward." In addition to the opener against the Rattlers, Rice will miss Monday's game against Delaware State and next Thursday's opener of the Charleston Classic against St. Joseph's. Redshirt sophomore Brandon Reed took Rice's place in the starting line up and had a game-high 16 points, on 6-of-8 shooting, including 3-for-5 from three, but also had a team-high six turnovers. Freshman guard Julian Royal chipped in 10 points, including going 7-for-8 from the line, and senior Nick Foreman added nine, including hitting 2-for-3 three-point shots. "We had some time to prepare for the suspension and so have our guys," said Gregory. "So we have two more games. We need to keep making improvements and then get him back."
