Gilvydas Biruta had 17 points, a career-high 12 rebounds and four steals to lead Rutgers to a 66-52 victory over Hampton on Sunday.
Jerome Seagears came off the bench for 10 points and three assists and Myles Mack had nine points, three assists and four steals for the Scarlet Knights (3-1). Rutgers won its second straight game in the Triple Crown Cancun Challenge.
Darrion Pellum had 21 points and Jasper Williams added 12 for Hampton (1-2), which fell to 0-6 against teams currently in the Big East.
Rutgers expanded a seven-point lead to 42-27 by starting the second half with a 12-4 run. The Pirates rallied to within 51-46 with 6:07 remaining on a 3-pointer by Williams.
After the Scarlet Knights called a timeout, Biruta hit a running hook in the lane to start an 11-0 run for a 62-46 lead with 3:03 remaining. Rutgers led for the entire contest.
