Potential No. 1 NBA Draft pick Joel Embiid has a stress fracture in his right foot that will require surgery, his agent confirmed in a written statement Thursday. "Joel Embiid suffered a stress fracture to the navicular bone in his right foot," Arn Tellem, Embiid's agent, wrote. "He is scheduled to have surgery (Friday). Joel will be unable to participate in additional workouts, and will not attend the draft in New York." Embiid's injury was reportedly discovered by Cleveland doctors following an individual workout with the Cavaliers last week. The Cavs own the No. 1 overall pick in the draft. According to sources, the Cavs put the 7-footer from Kansas through a rigorous workout and his medicals initially checked out. The Cavs were more concerned with examining Embiid's back at the time -- as a stress fracture caused him to miss the final weeks of his lone college basketball season. The foot issue wasn't discovered until later, sources said. Even after initial reports of the injury, Embiid remained in the running for the No. 1 pick. As of 12:30 p.m. Eastern, he was still on the Cavs' draft board, a source said. However, that was before his agent revealed news of the surgery. The injury is not believed to be career-threatening and the Cavs will not make a firm decision on Embiid until they get his results following surgery, a source told FOX Sports Ohio. The Cavs also have been strongly considering Duke forward Jabari Parker and Kansas swingman Andrew Wiggins for their top selection. Following the Embiid discovery, a source familiar with the Cavs' thinking was asked whether the team preferred Wiggins over Parker or Parker over Wiggins, and jokingly responded, "That's correct." It is believed the Philadelphia 76ers, owners of the No. 3 pick, want Wiggins badly. While it may be nothing more than the typical smokescreen at this time of year, a source said if the Sixers want Wiggins, they "better be prepared" to make a trade for the first overall pick.
