Former Kentucky assistant coach Rod Strickland has accepted an assistant coaching job at DePaul. Strickland was demoted from assistant coach, to an administrative role after receiving his 4th DUI in April of 2010. Strickland goes back to his alma-mater where he was a star in the mid to late 80′s for the Blue Demons. He was a First Team All-American, and helped guide DePaul to four straight NCAA Tournament births, including two Sweet 16′s. He still ranks 8th in scoring, 3rd in assists, and 2nd in steals in DePaul history. After his playing days at DePaul, he was drafted 19th overall by the New York Knicks. Strickland spent 17 years in the NBA before retiring in 2005. He later took a job at Memphis with head coach John Calipari as director of basketball operations. After Calipari left Memphis for Kentucky after the 2009 season, Strickland followed the coach to Lexington. Calipari always made note of Strickland’s successes in college and the NBA as a point guard, and that helped him in recruiting the best point guards to Memphis and Kentucky. Guys like Derrick Rose, Tyreke Evans, John Wall, Brandon Knight, and Marquis Teague have all followed in Strickland’s footsteps of success in the college and being drafted to the NBA. The hire of Rod Strickland at DePaul can only help with their recruiting efforts and development of their players. A guy with so much basketball experience and knowledge is a vital asset to any program. Anyone can pick up a basketball, but there’s a certain dedication to making yourself a success with it. Strickland’s successes on the court are now aiding him greatly in his professional career as an administrator. Congratulations to Rod Strickland on returning to coach his alma-mater, and best wishes to him in the future.
