Kansas coach Bill Self admits his team drives him crazy at times. The turnovers, the rushed shots, the bad decisions and the inability to settle on an identity earlier this season combined to create stressful situations throughout the course of a 38-game schedule. Jayhawks center Jeff Withey says Kansas can be downright sloppy. That's what happened in the first half Saturday night, before the Jayhawks could correct their course in a 64-62 national semifinal victory over Ohio State. On the basketball court, sloppiness routinely comes with a finger of blame aimed at the point guard. In the case of the Jayhawks, that would be senior Tyshawn Taylor -- a true study in the art of contradiction. Exhibit A: (From the final seconds of that win in the Superdome Saturday night.) Kansas trailed by as many as 13 points in that sloppy first half, but played solid defense to get back in the game, eventually taking a 64-61 with 8.3 seconds remaining. With five seconds left, Taylor intercepte...

Self takes home Naismith award

Kansas' Bill Self has been named the 2012 Naismith Men's College Basketball Coach of the Year, the school announced on Sunday. "Bill has done a remarkable coaching job this season and deserves all the accolades that come his way," said Eric Oberman, executive director of the Atlanta Tipoff Club, which presents the honor. "There's always something special...

Davis, Kidd-Gilchrist, Lamb, Robinson, Taylor Named To All-Tournament Team

Anthony Davis was joined on the all-tournament team by teammates Michael Kidd-Gilchrist and Doron Lamb, along with Thomas Robinson and Tyshawn Taylor of Kansas.

Calipari, Self more than just recruiters

There is an inherent silliness to a profession like the one that has made rich men of John Calipari and Bill Self. They spend months, even years, burning thousands of gallons of jet fuel and begging teenagers to come play for them, even if it's just for 35 college games. And if you're good enough at that particular skill, you earn the label of "recruiter," which...

Jayhawks a reflection of Self

The 2011-2012 Kansas Jayhawks might not be Bill Self's best team. They're not his most talented or his deepest. But they might be the truest embodiment of his philosophy, thanks to a defense that at times resembles nothing so much as an active bear trap and a simple refusal to lose - much less panic - when everything is on the line.

Self Wins Naismith Coach of Year

NEW ORLEANS - The Atlanta Tipoff Club gives its voters plenty of time to determine its award winners in college basketball. That might have paid off for Kansas coach Bill Self, who was named the Naismith Coach of the Year on Sunday.

Self, Kansas flex rally chops again vs. OSU

NEW ORLEANS -- Down 13 on five different occasions in the first half on Saturday, Bill Self appeared to be on a path to his first loss in the Final Four. An 11-of-30 shooting performance in the opening 20 minutes usually doesn't equate to a national semifinal victory over a team as talented as Ohio State. But as they've done several times this year, Self's second-seeded...

Self on playing Cats

Kansas coach Bill Self: "They got pros, all that stuff. But I think we got good players, too."

Big comeback leads KU over Ohio St, into final

NEW ORLEANS (AP) -- Same story, new night for Kansas. The team that's been teetering on the edge of the tournament since before it even began is now one of the last two left. Tyshawn Taylor made two big free throws late, and Thomas Robinson finished with 19 points and eight rebounds Saturday night to lift the Jayhawks to a come-from-behind 64-62 win over Ohio State in the Final...

Kansas Jayhawks future NBAers: Tyshawn Taylor, Jeff Withey

When it comes to future NBA players on the Kansas Jayhawks roster, it of course starts with Thomas Robinson, the go-to-guy and likely top 5 pick in June. But there’s two guys you saw in the national title game last night who have professional potential to: point guard Tyshawn Taylor and Center Jeff Withey. Both have had their pluses and minuses highlighted and magnified on the...

Friendly suggestions for Jim Nantz's national championship call

The game-ending call of the national championship game from CBS's Jim Nantz has taken on a life of its own over the years.  Last year was perhaps Jim Nantz's finest hour in the prepared line department as he rang off not one, not two, but three dog puns in last year's Bulldogs v Huskies national title game.  Unfortunately, there have been no videos of Nantz preparing...

Source: Ex-Illini coach Weber hired by K-State

Kansas State has hired Bruce Weber as its basketball coach, turning to someone who once led Illinois to the national championship game to calm the waters in the wake of Frank Martin's departure for South Carolina. A person a familiar with the situation told The Associated Press that Weber will be introduced at a news conference Saturday afternoon at Bramlage Coliseum. The person...

Kansas-Kentucky Commentary: I’m Rooting For Kansas…But Find It Strangely Hard To Hate These Wildcats

I’m rooting for Kansas in tonight’s National Championship Game for a number of reasons that actually have to do with Kansas: It seems heartless to root against Thomas Robinson once you hear his story. Tyshawn Taylor has been around forever. I always find myself rooting for guys like him nowadays. I’ve personally always found Kansas fans to be knowledgeable and classy, so...

This is it

After Kansas completed a mammoth comeback against Missouri in Lawrence back in late February, Head Coach Bill Self was asked if his team was getting tougher and if it had the mettle to compete in March.
