Twitter/@LJPeak1 UConn already showed that its residency in the American Athletic Conference will not stop it from maintaining a strong basketball program. The Huskies’ 2014-15 roster already includes North Carolina State transfer Rodney Purvis and Daniel Hamilton, the No. 27 player in the class of 2014. Theys are inching closer to the No. 34 player (ESPN) in that class, as LJ Peak, a 6-foot-5 wing from Chicago, has named UConn as one of his final five schools. UCONN — PEAkOò (@LJPeak1) May 30, 2013 Peak’s decision eliminates Clemson, Memphis, North Carolina State, Purdue, Tennessee and Wake Forest from contention. All of those schools had submitted offers to Peak. A teammate of No. 1 prospect Jahlil Okafor at Whitney Young in Chicago, Peak averaged 14.5 points per game this season. ESPN Insider’s scouting report of Peak describes him as a “superior athlete who scores from everywhere on the floor.” Critics say that he is less interested in defense than he is on offense, but also that he does not need much work to become a defensive threat. Although he will never likely be an inside threat, Peak’s ability to score from anywhere could be important for the Huskies, who could potentially lose DeAndre Daniels to the NBA after his junior season. The announcement from Peak was met with excitement across UConn Country, and Peak took notice. Gamecocks and UCONN fans show major love. — PEAkOò (@LJPeak1) May 30, 2013 Other small forwards on UConn’s radar include JaKeenan Gant (No. 26), Kelly Oubre (No. 43) and Kameron Chatman (No. 49).
