Arizona guard Kyle Fogg is at the climax of a college career few expected him to experience, and he is making the most of it. "It means a lot to me prove all those people wrong," Fogg told the Orange County Register before averaging 18 points in victories over USC and UCLA, his final two home games for the Wildcats. "All those people who said I couldn't play at this level, those people who said I wasn't good enough." Fogg started this season slowly but has averaged 15.6 points over the past 12 games. Nine of those were victories, bringing the Cats back into the NCAA tournament picture. "Maybe proving people wrong was motivation for him when he first got to Arizona," said UCLA guard Jerime Anderson, a former high school rival who entered college with far more fanfare. "I don't think he has to prove anything now. "He's a greater shooter. We can't ignore him." Fogg scored 20 points to help the Wildcats beat the Bruins 65-63 in his final game at McKale Center. "We've turned around our season," Fogg said, "and now we have a chance to prove wrong those people who counted us out. Now we're able to put ourselves back in the NCAA talk." There were far more doubters when Fogg was coming out of high school. "A lot of people didn't think I could play at that level," Fogg said. Providence and Indiana showed a little bit of interest, "and that was about it," Fogg said. But then-Arizona coach Lute Olson saw something he liked in Fogg and invited him to Tucson. "That was a huge deal," Fogg said. "For Coach Olson to think that I was good enough to play at this level gave me all the confidence I needed." NOTES, QUOTES -- Senior F Jesse Perry, who had 16 points in his final game at McKale Center, wasn't prepared for the emotion he felt before the UCLA game. "I knew this day was going to come," Perry said, "but I wasn't going to go out there and cry or nothing like that. It was definitely emotional. It was almost like you created a brotherhood with your teammates, growing closer and closer. Just being here at McKale, here with the fans and how much support they showed, it's kind of hard to leave in an environment like that." -- The Wildcats avenged an earlier road loss to the Bruins despite shooting 37.5 percent from the field and missing four free throws in the final minute. -- Junior C Kyryl Natyazhko was suspended for the USC game because of an unspecified violation of team rules. Arizona said "further discipline will be handled internally." Natayazhko returned to the team two days later against UCLA but did not get into the game. BY THE NUMBERS: 33 -- Number of 20-victory seasons Arizona has accumulated after reaching the milestone with the win over USC. QUOTE TO NOTE: "I just wanted badly to go out with a win since I'll never be playing here again." -- Senior G Kyle Fogg, after scoring 20 points in Saturday's win over UCLA. PLAYER NOTES -- Freshman PG Josiah Turner, who has struggled with consistency all season, delivered a career-high 15 points and six assists off the bench in Arizona's win over USC. "To be honest, I still don't think he's played his best basketball," senior Kyle Fogg said. "I've seen things he's done. I just look at him and can tell he's going to be a pro." Turner had totaled just 25 points in six previous games. He wasn't quite as sharp two days later in a win over UCLA, finishing with no assists and five turnovers while contributing eight points and five rebounds. -- Senior F Jesse Perry went 8 for 9 and had 16 points to go with eight rebounds in the win over UCLA. Perry had an uncharacteristically quiet night against USC, providing just four points and five rebounds. -- Junior F Solomon Hill had 13 points in the Wildcats' win over UCLA. That followed a nine-point effort against USC that snapped a string of five consecutive double-digit scoring games.
