UCLA forward Reeves Nelson has been kicked off of the team by head coach Ben Howland. It's been a rough start to the season for the Bruins (2-5) and an even rougher start for Nelson. "This continues a trend of very disappointing behavior by Reeves, said Howland in a statement. I personally have worked hard with him to illustrate the importance of the code of conduct for our student-athletes, as well as the ramifications for violating it. I am disappointed that he has continued to fall short of my expectations." There is no timetable for the reevaluation of Nelsons status with the team. It has been a turbulant season thus far for the junior forward who has already been suspended for a game for "conduct unbecoming of a member of the UCLA basketball team." After being reinstated to join the team for their trip to Maui, Nelson missed the team bus and flight to Hawaii, causing him to be suspended for the first half of the Bruins win over host Chaminade. Howland gave his forward a mulligan for oversleeping saying that it wasn't in his character and Nelson is "a morning person." What Howland hasn't been apologetic for is Nelson's attitude or effort. Nelson was benched the entire second half of the Bruins' loss to Texas last Saturday. Howland and his staff were livid after Nelson was late to give help on a dunk by Clint Chapman at the end of the first half and the decision was made at halftime that he wouldn't play the rest of the game. "He missed a defensive assignment late in that first half where (Chapman) got a dunk where we just didn't come over and help. It was really frustrating because everybody saw it coming on the bench," Howland said following the loss to Texas. Howland continued: "It's him, it's his mental part. He had a couple of practices that were, again, not great leading up to this game. "Reeves hasn't played to how he's capable of playing for various reasons and a lot of it has been his attitude," said Howland. "You play in the game how you practice." The team has yet to make an official statement. Howland is scheduled to meet with the media this afternoon for his weekly press conference.
