PLAYERS: P.J. Hairston
TEAMS:
P.J. Hairston P.J. Hairston’s tumultuous summer came to a point of no return earlier this week. After being cited for another traffic violation early Sunday afternoon, coach Roy Williams suspended the star guard indefinitely. On July 15th Roy Williams released a statement promising that Hairston would pay “serious consequences” for the mistakes he had made earlier in the summer. One would think that at that point Hairston would have behaved like a model citizen going forward, but apparently that was not the case. More than anything, Hairston’s latest misstep is a serious head scratcher. It is hard to believe that a player so important to UNC’s season could have found himself in any more trouble after all the trouble he had already been in this summer. Before this latest infraction, Hairston had already had already had a traffic violation, an arrest for drug possession, and been linked to a convicted felon for a vehicle he was driving during a traffic violation. Hairston is not a bad kid, but his repeated offensives in such a short span of time no choice but to suspend him. Perhaps the only good thing about Hairston’s suspension is that because UNC was proactive in suspending the guard, the NCAA may not feel the need to intervene and punish Hairston further. The indefinite nature of Hairston’s suspension has lent itself to much speculation. Many in the media are calling for the guard to be removed from the team, while UNC fans hope that the guard won’t miss more than a handful of games. One thing is certain however, Hairston can not afford to get in any more trouble in the near future if he has any hope of playing for UNC this season.
