Watch: Duke's Kyle Filipowski fouls out against NC State

Duke center Kyle Filipowski looks like an NBA lottery pick. NC State DJ Burns, Jr. looks like a defensive linemen. Sunday, in the Elite Eight, Burns outscored and outlasted the Duke freshman.

Filipowski picked up his fifth foul with 4:52 remaining and his Duke Blue Devils trailing the North Carolina State Wolfpack, 56-44. In a physical game, Filipowski was whistled for two offensive fouls and stymied by Burns and backup big man Ben Middlebrooks. Some of his contact-heavy drives to the basket that got him buckets and free throws earlier turned into offensive fouls later.

NC State's Mohamed Diarra also spent the game in foul trouble, but his frontcourt counterparts picked him up.

While Filipowski finished with 11 points, nine rebounds and three turnovers, his less-heralded NC State opposite showed an array of offensive moves on his way to 29 points and two blocks in his team's 76-64 win.

CBS announcer Bill Raftery said Burns – who has become a fan favorite in the No. 11 seed Wolfpack's improbable run to the Final Four – had "the body of Zach Randolph and the personality of Shaq." He scored like Shaq in the second half on Sunday, putting up 21 points after halftime.

North Carolina State is an unusual Cinderella team because they have been winning with dominating play down low. After a middling season in which they finished 10th in their conference, they won five games in five nights to take the ACC Tournament, then their first four March Madness games. That's nine straight wins, two of which came against the Blue Devils.

Filipowski fouled out of their ACC Tournament matchup, too, but only after scoring 28 points. Sunday, after just 11 points, Filipowski fouled out and Duke got knocked out. Courtesy of a player who wasn't on anyone's draft boards, but is now tops on this year's list of March Madness legends.
