Andre Jones scored 27 points and Reggie Middleton had his first double-double of the season as Winthrop rallied from a nine-point deficit and held on to defeat Virginia Military Institute 91-84 on Saturday. Middleton had 18 points and 12 rebounds and reserve Matt Morgan added 20 points for the Eagles on 8-of-14 shooting. Winthrop (6-10, 3-2 Big South Conference) trailed 32-23 with 5:56 to go until halftime. Jones then scored nine points and George Valentine, who finished with 16, added four as Winthrop battled to get within a point, 37-36, at the break. Tied at 41 with 18:31 left, Valentine scored four points and Jones had two, putting the Eagles ahead for good. Winthrop won its second straight after a four-game skid and snapped a three-game losing streak to the Keydets (7-9, 2-4). Keith Gabriel scored 26 points on 7-of-18 shooting, including 5 of 9 3-pointers, to lead VMI.
