MADISON, Wis. After carefully studying exactly what his role might be for Wisconsin's men's basketball team this year, freshman George Marshall opted to take a redshirt season on Wednesday."I just looked at this season and came to the conclusion that a fifth year in this program will be more beneficial than what is potentially a season with limited minutes," Marshall said in a release before Wisconsin's game against Colgate. "I asked myself if it was worth playing this season, when I could possibly be playing a lot of minutes as a fifth-year senior."Marshall, a 5-foot-11, 180-pound guard from Chicago, Ill., likely would have been the sixth guard option in the Badgers' rotation this season. Senior Jordan Taylor and sophomore Josh Gasser are starters in the backcourt, while sophomore Ben Brust already has nailed down the sixth man role.Senior Rob Wilson and freshman Traevon Jackson currently are battling for minutes as the team's fourth guard. Marshall did not play in Wisconsin's 85-31 season-opening victory against Kennesaw State on Saturday while mulling over his decision to redshirt. He played just four minutes during the Badgers' exhibition game against Division III UW-Stevens Point, scoring two points on 1 of 2 shooting from the field."This is a great opportunity for George to have a one-year internship under arguably the best point guard in the country," Badgers associate head coach Greg Gard said of Taylor. "He can learn from that and at the same time know that he'll be better physically and fundamentally as a player at 22 or 23 years old than he is at 19. The extra year at the back end of his career can really turn into something special."Marshall was named second-team all-state in Illinois by the Associated Press last season. He averaged 17.3 points, 5.9 rebounds and 5.4 assists for Chicago Brooks College Prep, leading the team to the Chicago Public League championship. Marshall said he conferred with teammate Ryan Evans, a junior who took a redshirt season his freshman year in 2008-09 and now is one of the Badgers' starters."Ryan definitely suggested it, and he said he's really happy he redshirted and it helped him a lot," Marshall said. "I'm confident that I could compete for minutes this season, but this just gives me another year to prove it."Follow Jesse Temple on Twitter.
