Report: Indiana women’s basketball head coach Teri Moren turns down Tennessee job

Teri Moren has flipped the script when it comes to Bloomington and the perspective around the Indiana women’s basketball program in the national lens.

After another successful season with Indiana, one of the sports biggest brands came calling but Moren has made her decision to stick with Indiana. According to Mitchell Northam of USA Today Sports, she “rejected overtures from Tennessee” as it related to its head coaching vacancy.

This comes a week after Tennessee fired head coach Kellie Harper. It was later reported that the Lady Vols would be hiring Marshall’s Kim Caldwell.

Moren is fresh off of another Sweet Sixteen appearance with Indiana this season, the third in four years. Indiana women’s basketball finished this season 26-6 overall following its loss to No. 1 overall seed and eventual National Champion, South Carolina.

Indiana was one of the few teams to give the Gamecocks a close game in the second half and fourth quarter. They would actually outscore South Carolina 43-30 after halftime before falling 79-75.

Moren is the all-time winningest coach for Indiana women’s basketball and has taken them to three Sweet Sixteens and an Elite Eight. She has nine consecutive 20-win seasons for IU.

Last year, she helped lead Indiana to its first regular season Big Ten title in 40 years and helped Indiana secure its first-ever one-seed in the NCAA Tournament.

She is 226-99 overall in her 10 years at Indiana and 114-60 in Big Ten play.

“This is the vision that Coach Moren had for this program and I knew when I got on campus I wanted to be a part of it,” Mackenzie Holmes said during the NCAA Tournament. “I could tell what she was building, the confidence that she had in her players and her staff and just to be able to be a small piece that have history is amazing, it’s the greatest blessing in my life.”

“I love playing for a coach that wants to win it for us as much as she wants to win for herself,” Sydney Parrish added. “I think that’s so special and you see her celebrating getting emotional into it and it’s just a blessing for us.”

The Hoosiers will be making a massive transition in their program with the departure of all-time winningest player and all-time scoring leader Mackenzie Holmes. Indiana also will lose All-Big Ten Second Team selection Sara Scalia to graduation as well.

Indiana does return seniors Chloe Moore-McNeil and Sydney Parrish to pair with the expected return of sophomore forward Yarden Garzon.
