2024 SEC football schedule is chock-full of marquee matchups

Normally, a college football schedule release wouldn't get much attention until the season approaches.

However, with the additions of Oklahoma and Texas in 2024, the Southeastern Conference got a head-start on its schedule release Wednesday night. Here are some of the biggest games to look forward to next season:

Georgia @ Alabama, Sept. 28

The Bulldogs and Crimson Tide rarely meet in the regular season, with most of their matchups saved for the SEC Championship Game each December. Sept. 28 will mark just the fourth visit to Tuscaloosa for Georgia in the 21st century. It'll be an immediate test for two of college football's premier programs.

Oklahoma vs. Texas (in Dallas), Oct. 12

The 120th edition of the "Red River Rivalry" will mark the first meeting of the Sooners and Longhorns with an SEC tie-in. The moves of Oklahoma and Texas from the Big 12 Conference were catalysts for the radical conference realignment that has rocked college sports over the last few years.

Georgia @ Texas, Oct. 19

Georgia will visit Austin, Texas for just the second time in school history. The Bulldogs' only previous game at Texas was a 13-8 loss in 1958. Here's hoping that mascots Uga and Bevo will be kept at a distance, unlike their 2019 Sugar Bowl confrontation:

Texas @ Arkansas, Nov. 16

Those with long memories will be pleased with the renewal of a rivalry that dates back to the old Southwest Conference. The Longhorns and Razorbacks met every year between 1932 and '91. Ten of their meetings came with both teams ranked in the top 10, most notably in 1969 when top-ranked Texas beat No. 2 Arkansas 15-14 with President Richard Nixon in attendance.

Alabama @ Oklahoma, Nov. 23

The Crimson Tide and Sooners have only met twice in the regular season, a home-and-home series in 2002 and '03 with both games won by Oklahoma. It'll be their first matchup since Tua Tagovailoa led Alabama to a 45-34 win over Kyler Murray and Oklahoma in the 2018 Orange Bowl.

Oklahoma @ LSU, Nov. 30

These two college football blue bloods have never met in the regular season and have only faced each other in three bowl games. LSU most famously — or infamously — beat Oklahoma in the 2004 Sugar Bowl to win the BCS National Championship, while USC claimed the title in the AP poll. Ah, the good old days of contested championships.

Texas @ Texas A&M, Nov. 30

The Longhorns and Aggies met every year for almost a century between 1915 and 2011 before Texas A&M's move to the SEC in 2012. While the two teams have only played two top-10 matchups — in 1941 and '75 — the rivalry is bitter, with each school mentioned in each other's fight song. The renewal of this previously dormant rivalry is one of the biggest upsides of the SEC's expansion.
