PLAYERS: Matt Elam
TEAMS: Florida Gators
HT:     5-10          WT:     202 YR:     Jr              Pos:    SS     Notables: 2012(as of 11/26/12): 65 tack, 10 tfl, 1sack, 4 ints, 5PBU, 1 FF 2011: 78 tack, 11 tfl, 7 PBU, 2 FF Pros Solid frame Plays with good knee bend and leverage Has good footwork Fills the lanes quickly against the run when coming from the deep safety position Physical with WRs at LOS when in coverage Naturally instinctive playmaker Great in the open field Exceptional when playing in the box Has good explosion Isn’t easily blocked on the perimeter by WRs Fearless and aggressive hitter Instinctive in zone coverage Competent in man to man coverage Cons Height (trouble with bigger TE’s and WRs) At times he lets WRs get him on his heels in man to man coverage Plays out of control sometimes Would like to see more range in the passing game (especially from the deep safety position) Thoughts Elam is a force when in the box and is more effective than most LBs when playing in the box. I believe he is a pure SS and wouldn’t be as effective at FS on the next level due to his average range in the passing game. You have to love what Elam brings to the table as a player and especially as a SS because he is exceptional in the running game and more than competent in the passing game. Although Elam has a few things to work on, and isn’t the ideal height you would like out of a safety, he is arguably the best safety prospect in this year’s draft.   Related articles Gators’ defense didn’t fold despite being put in bad situations by offense BCS Bowl Games 2012-2013: Players to Watch in Each BCS Matchup

Big Weekend for Muschamp and Crew

The Florida Gators picked up two verbal commitments earlier today when JuCo offensive linemen Trenton Brown and linebacker/tight end Matt Rolin made their intentions known. Rolin is a four star prospect and the 17th ranked linebacker in America. Brown is a 6'7 345-pound four star prospect that will provide immediate help.

Breakout players from 2012

No one expected an 11-1 regular season in Gainesville. The Gators opened the season ranked No. 23 in the polls without an identity on offense. The defense was set with experienced players coming back, but there weren’t All-Americans or household names covering the roster. That changed as the season continued to progress and the Gators had multiple players go through breakout years.
