Bulldogs! Georgia is No. 1 in preseason AP poll

By the time Georgia was done demolishing Hawaii in the Sugar Bowl, it was apparent the Bulldogs were well on their way to being No. 1 -- to start the 2008 college football season.

Seeking its first national championship in 28 years, Georgia is on top of The Associated Press preseason Top 25 for the first time.

The Bulldogs received 22 first-place votes and 1,528 points from a panel of 65 media members in the poll released Saturday.

''To have people believing we have one of the best teams in the nation going into this thing, it's exciting for us,'' Bulldogs coach Mark Richt said in a telephone interview with the AP.

''I don't think anything is guaranteed, but we certainly have put ourselves in position where at least the college football world thinks we're pretty good.''

Ohio State, coming off a second consecutive loss in the national championship game but returning 20 starters, is No. 2. The Buckeyes received 21 first-place votes and 1,506 points.

No. 3 Southern California, which plays Ohio State in Los Angeles on Sept. 13, received 12 first-place votes. No. 4 Oklahoma had four first-place votes and No. 5 Florida received six first-place votes.

Georgia finished last season 11-2 and No. 2 in the country behind Southeastern Conference rival LSU. The Tigers won the national championship in the Superdome in New Orleans on Jan. 7 by beating the Buckeyes.

But a week earlier on that same field the Bulldogs ended their season with a seventh straight victory and sent a message about 2008: ''Look out!''

Georgia toyed with high-scoring Hawaii and its Heisman Trophy finalist quarterback Colt Brennan in a 41-10 rout, and one glance at the Bulldogs' depth chart, with all those freshmen and sophomores playing major roles, revealed the Bulldogs would be a force this season. The questions started even as Georgia celebrated its big victory on the confetti-covered turf.

Richt's job since then has been to keep his team from getting too wrapped up in the hype.

''I think it motivates the guys to prepare well, but the big thing is: If you think about a championship way back in January ... that can wear you down,'' Richt said. ''It's our responsibility as coaches to help these guys break it down to one day at a time, one workout at a times, one practice at a time. Just prepare to be in position for the challenge.

''If we don't work, we'll have no chance.''

No. 6 Missouri has its best preseason ranking. The Tigers ended last season No. 4, which was their best showing ever in the final poll.

LSU's Tigers will begin defense of their national championship ranked seventh. West Virginia is eighth, Clemson is ninth and No. 10 Auburn gives the SEC four top-10 teams to start the season.

With Florida and LSU taking the last two national titles, the SEC could become the first to conference to have three different teams win consecutive national titles.

Georgia certainly has the ingredients on the field to make that happen.

''We take it one step at a time. All we can do is focus on the smaller picture,'' receiver Mohamed Massaquoi said. ''We can't let ourselves get overwhelmed. It takes away from playing hard and playing smart.''

The Bulldogs return 16 starters, including quarterback Matthew Stafford, already being touted as a future first-round draft pick, and running back Knowshon Moreno, who became the first Georgia freshman to run for 1,000 yards since Herschel Walker did it while leading the Bulldogs to the national title in 1980.

Stafford has been starting since his freshman season, and so far has been more of a caretaker quarterback than a star for the Bulldogs. He completed 56 percent of his passes last season for 2,523 yards and 19 touchdowns with 10 interceptions.

The Bulldogs expect more from the 6-foot-3, 237-pound NFL prototype.

''I think he's ready to fly,'' Richt said. ''He improved tremendously from his freshman year.

''We're all kind of growing together with Matt. This year we ought to see a better performance by him, not only because he's better but because the guys around have improved also.''

Stafford will, however, be without his left tackle from last season. Trinton Sturdivant, who started every game as a freshman last season, injured his left knee in a preseason scrimmage and is done for the year.

On defense, the Bulldogs have a potential All-American in every unit, starting with 290-pound tackle Geno Atkins, middle linebacker Dannell Ellerbe, who led the team in tackles and had a huge game in the Sugar Bowl, and cornerback Asher Allen, who was second on the team in tackles and had three interceptions.

The second 10 of the Top 25 begins with No. 11 Texas, followed by Big 12 rival Texas Tech. No. 13 is Wisconsin, with Kansas and Arizona State next.

BYU, ranked in the preseason for the first time since 1997, is 16th.

Virginia Tech is 17th and Tennessee is 18th. South Florida, which made the AP Top 25 for the first time last year and rose all the way to No. 2, has its first preseason ranking at No. 19.

Illinois rounds out the top 20.

The final five are Oregon, Penn State, Wake Forest, Alabama and Pittsburgh, ranked in the preseason for the first time since 2003.

The SEC leads all conferences with six ranked teams, and Georgia has the other five on its schedule, plus a trip to Arizona State on Sept. 20.

''We definitely have our work cut out for us,'' Richt said.

So do the Bulldogs' opponents.

jump in and feel free to say your piece on this AP Poll

as of right now, put your top 5 if you disagree with the AP Pollers

USC....OSU......FLA.....OKLA.......GEORGIA

i can see that happening, good top 5

Not in 10,000,000 years. USC is done, and OSU have become the Buffalo Bills of the BCS. Often make it to the big game, and always choke when it matters most. I think OSU should be banned from the top 5 until they prove they can pull it out in the clutch.

and you are a fan of who moron. USC will show you how done they are this year.

How do you see the top 5 ending up?

we see it like this at this point

Ohio State
Georgia
USC
Florida
Oklahoma
Missouri
West Virgina
LSU
Clemson
Auburn
Texas
Texas Tech
Wisconsin
Arizona State
Kansas
Virgina Tech
BYU
Tennesee
USF
Illinois
Penn State
Oregon
Wake Forest
Alabama
Pittsburgh
Fresno State
Boise State

What do you guys think? I'm out there now in print for all to see. Are you?

Is this how you see the top 5 ending up at the end of the year? The SEC will be full of upsets this year and The Yard should kno i said it hear first...

actually i said it first.

Checkmate? What are your top 5, 'cmon, spill it.

Just give us your top 5 or 8 if you'd like, take a shot, its all fun

UGA now has some problems on the o-line their starting LT Sturdivant is out for the session with a knee injury

Mcfatty, I heard they had OL injuries but not who, That was the reason you'll see I dropped them to #2 on my list and was debating to drop them to #3 or #4 and move USC and Florida up 1. I say that because of the SEC and there banging on each other.

I think we wont see an undefeated champion this either and it could be a 2 loss champion.

What do you think?

No one will beat Southern California. This is the best defense they've had since Carroll has been there. Their linebackers and secondary are the best in the country......Hands down. Yall shall see.....They just want the SEC in the Orange Bowl.

Their D is vg and very fast but they have to keep it together for about 12 - 13 games

This is true, barring any major injuries they should be ok. That goes for any school injuries can be a killer.

So as it goes the only change I think I would make are at #4 and #5..............I would put Florida ahead of Oklahoma.

Georgia is ranked #1 in both polls ( Coaches / AP )...............now have the pollsters taken into any account that some keys players on Georgia's squad will not be starting the season ( they have had more than a handful of kids arrested or breaking team rules, or injuries ) ............this many kids with issues has to affect how they will fare in thier brutal schedule. It has to. Time will tell though. I would be nervous if I was a Bulldog fan.

And yes of course folks are ginding thier teeth seeing the Buckeyes at #2..................there is a reason for that folks. 22 starters back , at key posistions has to have an influence with the pollsters. And having a heavily touted Freshman QB that has the possibility to contribute in small doses , seeing the succes Florida had with Tebow early in his tenure with the Gators.

At anyrate..............from the looks at this first AP poll , it is clear to me that the College football season is gonna be filled with chills, thrills, and..................SPILLS. Who is gonna take themselves out of contention from going to Miami for the Big game? Let the season begin.............

wait till you see the report on osu, can't wait to see what you think..

did you see my post #7?

Nope.......I looked for it..........can't find it

up about in this post, post 7 just above this one about 7

Arizona State WILL beat Georgia @ ASU. Everyone sites the way Georgia worked Hawaii #1 Hawaii didnt belong in that game #2 Hawaii stinks on the road, always has always will. I agree with flabuckeye all those off the field expliots can only hurt.

That was the first time Hawaii was on the main land playing football.

yup

Hawaii is in the WAC so they do come to the mainland, but no further east than utah. Their last game of the regular season they just barely beat a beat up Oregon State team in Hawaii.

I was being sarcastic..............Hawaii had a deer in headlights look in that Bowl game with Georgia. Sorta like Illinois did with USC ...............LOL

Awww man i really felt bad for Hawaii after the first 10min of the game...Georgia wanted to prove that they belonged in the NC game and Hawaill was in the line of fire..

Flabuckeye? how do you see the top 5 panning out this year?

I agree. In fact, I think Hawai'i should take their ma-hollow team down to I-AA where they can face competition more befitting their abilities.

Untrue, if the game were in Hawaii it would've have been a much different ballgame. Not that Hawaii would have beaten Georgia for they would not have. But the SEC hicks wouldnt know how to handle the Islands.

I agree Frghton50, that they wouldn't know how to handle the Islands but it still would have been a blow out with Georgia coming out the winners

Illinios was looking into the headlights of a Mack truck with a 426 Hemi. I attended that game with my usaul endzone seat the best for seeing the true speed. The Illini could not come close to beating the Trojans to the outside on either side of the ball. It was a total mismatch Illinios did not belong on the same field.

i also agree, ASU will be good this too, and at home vg..GA can go from 1st to 8 real quick

true they shouldn't have been in that game, they didn't belong

Dean ............to respond to your ?? above about my opinon of how the top 5 will fair................

Georgia I think loses 2 or 3 of those games on that schedule. The injuries ,and off the field stuff catches up with them.

Ohio State and USC...............the winner of that one will be sitting pretty. ( wink , wink )

Florida has a couple key players hurt right now, they handle that I think they win the SEC.

Oklahoma should be able to have a good yr................but I think they fizzle towards the end.

good points, thanks for the response and honesty, Flabuckeye

It's best to wait to week 5 to determine the top five.

That is true GR, but what's the fun in that? Hell why not just wait till..........I don't know.........week 10 and pick 'em then? There's now fun in that, Now if it was the winning lottery #'s, thats a different story.

Which reminds me, GR, do you know the winning lottery #'s for 5 weeks from today? LOL... j/k man...

No, really do you know them?

You all know that I am West (best) Coast homer by now. So with that a sleeper team to watch is Arizona State Ericson is a fantastic coach and knows how to win. They are loaded with talented speed on both sides of the ball (the game is all about speed nowadays...trust me). Furthermore they have the lowest standards on academics than any other school in the Pac 10. It actually is just a Big cut ahead of the SEC....as can tell by the moronic writings of SECforever....SC done..What a moron.....When the SEC finally finds a team to beat them bring them on.

Ok where to start on this one, Fighton, LOL...

Sorry your wrong, your not on the best coast, unless of course your talking gangs, then I think, Detroit, Chicago and NY would beg to differ.

As for a sleeper in AZ St., their not a sleeper this year, last year they were that at the beginning, this year they're expected to win and Ericson is a great coach and does know how to win.

As for your academic comment, we already know there are nothing but ROCKS there at ASU...of course there are rocks there, its the desert silly.

Dean look it up what conference has the most National Titles than any other? Of course Pac 10! And its not even close. As far as College Athletics (which I was refering) it is the best coast. Although for history the East coast is what its all about. Az st is a sleeper to some extent, lets just say for -----& giggles Az st runs the table and makes it to the Championship Game would that not be a shocker. Lets see how much respect they get when facing Georgia i.e the betting line. Speaking of Georgia does anyone out there know why their fight song is the same as Auburns and who used it first......Glory glory to ole Goergia Glory glory to ole Georgia Glory glory to ole Georgia........G E O R G I A! Auburns is the same.....its wierd.

HOLY CRAP!!! This one fell through the cracks, but is so hilarious we felt the need to bring it to our audience. It reportedly was done by Mr. Two Cents, a farker on a Florida Gator board, and was first spotted on the excellent blog, EDSBS. It is a mockup of a Rose Bowl page done to match the appearance of mock pages in the Onion's "This Dumb Century." If you are able to read the text, please do so (you can click on the image, or copy it to your desktop to make it readable), as it is equally funny. Not to be outdone, the Onion has an infographic highlighting the best of the bowls that is worth a read. It earlier posted a funny item on Notre Dame deciding to make improvements to its storied history.

And dont forget Fla. Been there its a warzone

Dean, good one I knew it was coming sooner or later. That Rose Bowl was tough one to swallow. The game was over and SC gave it away............4th and a yard and a half ball on SC 47. All American punter at worst Texas has to go 80 yards. If malone hits a great punt maybe 90. Never in my wildest dreams did I think Carrol would go for it. And to top it off Reggie Bush is on the bench.................WOW!

P.S. Dean come to Orange County Ca. huntington, newport, Corona del mar, laguna, San Clemente there are no gangs its Utopia!

fighton, do you realize that you just asked the sec to play a tough non-conference game? not just any game though, you want them to play the men of troy? ha ha ha . we both know that hawaii would win a national title before that ever happened. even if they did want to play it would have to be at the sec school or neutral site. thats how the sec rolls.
