[Editor's note: bumped for obvious reasons. I was just going to say the same stuff about the long handoffs anyway in UFR.]I just finished breaking down the first half plus the first series of the second half from the Penn State game.  Overall, the defense was generally solid, but there were a handful of major gaffes.  When you gaffe on defense, the other team gashes you, usually for six.  This happened Saturday.  What compounded these problems was the ineffectiveness of the offense, which I believe can be primarily explained by two words: David Molk.  The team practiced all week with Molk at center and then for him to get injured after 5 plays and out for the rest of the first half really hurt the execution.  The other major offensive problem was catching a football. When you wear gloves. When you get paid to do it. [ed.: in scholarships, folks!]To quote Brian: "Blearrrggghhhh!"After Penn State's 2nd offensive series (on which they kicke...

The Decimated Defense

[Editor's note: I was working on a post similar to this today that examined the past five years of defensive recruiting with a particular focus on the secondary. This is broader but I may as well not reinvent such a well-put-together wheel. I will take this opportunity at the top of the post to rephrase something I stuck in a mailbag. Here are the members of the secondary in...

David Molk Out for Season with Torn ACL

Michigan center David Molk returned to action on Saturday after missing the last four games with a broken foot.  His return was great news for Michigan’s offensive line, because it allowed David Moosman to move back to his normal position and in general made the line better. Unfortunately, his return only lasted four plays.  On the [...]

Upon Further Review: Defense vs Penn State

Personnel notes: As noted Monday, Michigan had an actual substitution package: on passing downs Williams would be replaced by Cissoko. For obvious reasons, that's unlikely to continue down the road. The rest of it was as usual, with the line rotating regularly and no one else coming out ever. One exception: late in the game Obi Ezeh was yanked twice, first for a play and then...

Michigan Loses David Molk For Rest of Season

It seems that the Iowa Hawkeyes aren’t the only team who are going to have a hole to fill in their offensive line for the next few weeks.  The Michigan Wolverines have learned that center David Molk, who left the Penn State game after the fourth play, has suffered a torn ACL. Rich Rodriguez made the announcement on Monday morning, and as is normally the case when it comes to torn ACLs, Molk is

Michigan loses C Molk for season to knee injury

Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez says center David Molk is out for the season after tearing a ligament in his right knee against Penn State. Rodriguez said Monday that Molk will not participate in spring drills because of the injury. Molk returned to the lineup Saturday after missing four games with a broken foot. The sophomore from Lemont, Ill., was...
