The New York Mets travel (6-8) travel to Jupiter today to face the Florida Marlins (6-7) in Grapefruit League play. John Maine (0-0, 10.80) will be the starting pitcher for the Mets, and will take the mound at 1:05 p.m. eastern.
Here's how the lineup looks for New York:
Cory Sullivan, cf
Luis Castillo, 2b
Ryan Church, rf
Fernando Tatis, 3b
Bobby Kielty, lf
Marlon Anderson, 1b
Brian Schneider, c
Ruben Tejada, ss
John Maine, sp
Some notable spring stats so far:
Cory Sullivan- .313 avg, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 8 runs, 32 AB
Bobby Kielty- .292 avg, 1 HR, 8 RBI, 3 runs, 24 AB
Luis Castillo- .318 avg, .500 OBP, 6 RBI, 7 runs, 22 AB
Marlon Anderson- .400 avg, 3 RBI, 1 run, 20 AB
Jeremy Reed- .324 avg, 1 HR, 4 RBI, 7 runs, 34 AB
Daniel Murphy- .366 avg, .426 OBP, 6 RBI, 6 runs, 41 AB (T-2nd most in MLB)
Clearly it has been a good spring for some unlikely players, and the battle for the final spot on the bench is heating up as April approaches. The resurgence of Marlon Anderson and Luis Castillo are good signs, and Daniel Murphy has picked up right where he left off in 2008.
That being said, it's only spring training.
Continue to keep an eye on guys like Sullivan, Kielty, Reed, and Anderson, since they are all likely bench candidates.
Today's game is not broadcast on either SNY or MLB.TV, but MLB.com should have a live box score you can follow. The bad thing is, it's scheduled at the same time as the ACC Championship game...

Things Going Right
Tim Redding won't be ready to open the season with the Mets. John Maine isn't throwing his curveball yet. Freddie Garcia looks like what he is -- a thirty-something pitcher trying to come back from shoulder surgery. Livan Hernandez can't break a pane of glass at ten paces with his fastball.
While spring training 2009 has been a relatively happy camp, there is no shortage...
For Pelfrey, it's addition by subtraction
With Pedro Martinez' durability in question and John Maine's health lingering, the last thing the Mets need is another pitching scare. But, one could be brewing ever so quietly as the season wears on.

Maine - "Don't think meat, just pitch"......
To borrow a phrase from one of my favorite sports movies Bull Durham, John Maine admits that he's over thinking when pitching. The result is that he's been shaky every start this spring. To his credit Maine was shut down last year and had off-season surgery so it should be expected that he's extra rusty and it's still early in camp. But I won't lie; when I was...
NY Mets: Situation Dire on Bonnie Brae
With a sinking feeling, I watched last night's action unfurl at Shea Stadium knowing full well that the Mets were hellbent on losing to the Chicago Cubs. Little did I know they would lose 9-6 in the 10th inning. Even when the Mets had the bases loaded, with one out in the bottom of the ninth, in a 6-6 tie, I could not overcome the dark doubt in the far recesses of my mind that prevented...
Hell Freezes Over - Randolph Drops Delgado To Sixth
Sometimes logic eventually prevails when it comes to the New York Mets.In a surprise move, Willie Randolph finally dropped Carlos Delgado down to sixth in the order. It was a move that Mets fans have been screaming for on Mets blogs everywhere.Ryan Church will step in at bat fifth behind cleanup hitt...
Murder by Numbers at Shea
It's taken me a full night of silence. Seven or so hours of quiet contemplation. I've still spoken little this morning. I am just finally coming around to the point of potential verbal communication to other human beings. The reason? For those who know me, the answer is quite simple: the New York Metropolitans.
We Mets fans are a masochistic lot. In some ways, such is...
Nat's lose to Pirates 7-6
The nationals lost last night to the pirates 7-6. The nationals had help from Ryan Church who had 3 hits and 2 runs. Felipe Lopez drove in 2 runs and Mike Bacsik gave up 6 hits/6 runs in 6 innings. It's funny because Mike Bacsik woke up with a stomach ailment. This brings me back to think when they w...
Church Gets $2.8 Million, Avoids Arbitration
According to Jon Heyman the Mets and Ryan Church have agreed to a $2.8 million deal that will avoid an arbitration hearing.
There are four Mets still set to go to arbitration. They are starting pitcher John Maine, reliever Pedro Feliciano and outfielders Jeremy Reed & Angel Pagan.
Mets acquire J.J. Putz from the Mariners

Steve Bartman sighting in Arizona
If you're from Chicago, you remember the play. The Cubs were five outs away from going to the World Series. With one out in the top of the eighth inning in Game 6 of the National League Championship Series, Luis Castillo slapped a Mark Prior fastball toward the left field corner and Moises Alou sprinted toward the dividing brick wall. And while most fans with a grasp of baseball common sense..
Getting to Second Base
I'll be touching on this in more detail at some point very soon, but all of us die-hards who pay attention in the off-season understand that Luis Castillo -- barring an unlikely trade or injury -- will provide a dominant story line in spring training and into the start of the
