After beating Alabama in the Sugar Bowl 31-17, Utah was tooting its own horn about achieving perfection. The Utes finished the year at 13-0 becoming the only undefeated team in Division-I. Not helping matters is coach Kyle Whittingham's claim that he's voting his team #1 in the Coaches' Poll. "This is a [...]

  • I agree that Utah should not be the #1 team. But would you be saying the same about Penn State? If they had beaten Iowa, they would have been voted near-unanimous #1 and would be playing in BCS title game. And the only '"major" team they beat soundly was Oregon State. Would they deserve to be #1?
  • They still deserve a shot at the title...just a shame theres not a playoff yet!
  • There is no proof that they are not #1. They are unbeaten. They beat several very good teams along the way. They beat an Alabama team who was #1 for most of the year in the BCS bowl. Of course, "no proof that they are not #1" does not actually mean #1, but it certainly does not lend any legitimacy to any other team either. None of them actually beat Utah or beat any team that beat Utah.
  • Can someone Please tell me with the exception of Alabama in the Bowl, who did Utah beat that was ranked during the regular season?Seriously I don't recall them beating any team in the Top 25 or even the Top 10 for that matter, and what was their strength of schedule??? As Dickie V says Cupcake City Babyyyy!!!
  • They beat Alabama (#4), BYU (#17), TCU (#11), and Oregon State (will be approx. #19). These teams will all be ranked in the Top 25 by end of week.
  • They beat every single team that was put in front of them and showed the country they're for real against Bama. Can't ask any more of them.
  • Utah is NOT even close to being #1. so what you beat alabama who was overrated all along. Let them play OU and see what a real team looks like. OU would destroy them. OU will destroy Florida 56-17. So Utes fans, you went unbeaten but only played 3 actual games. so don't expect any real respect because i dont think you deserve it. play a schedule like OU did and win the way they did, then i might give you some respect.
  • Riiight! I'm sure you said last year let WVU play a real team like OU since they didn't face any real challenges in their conference. How'd that one work out?
  • Hey OU junkie, Your Big 12 plays flag football. Heard this **** a few years ago when OU was undefeated...........USC 55 OU 19. Wake up!!!
  • For UNC23Tarheels...
    11/06 No. 12 TCU 10-0 (6-0) W 13-10
    11/22 No. 14 Brigham Young 12-0 (8-0) W 48-24
Big surprise a UNC fan knowing very little about football, but with a little luck Butch Davis will change that culture...
We ALL know Utah won't be voted #1, but they should be in consideration... granted, TCU and BYU weren't/aren't respected nationally but were ranked #12 and #14 respectively when Utah beat them (TCU beat #6 Boise St and BYU lost to an unranked Arizona in there bowl games) and you CANNOT control your conference schedule. Oh yeah, and they EMBARRASED Alabama, a team many thought was the best in the country for most of the season...
  • Well Okay that's impressive,But Don't get it Twisted I could care less about Tarheel Football,Basketball is my game so Whodey24,I'm not worried about Butch Davis..
  • Just wondering who was #1 in hoops...could you help me out there Mr. Tarheel? haha sorry, couldn't resist!
  • I'll give you that DTRIK19 LMAO!!! Good Luck in Big East Conference Play especially with Uconn,Syracuse,Louville,Georgetown and Notre Dame that's a Tough Conference there..
  • Well the beat TCU, Oregon St (who by the way beat USC), BYU, and Alabama. Not saying their schedule is a big 12 claiber or SEC caliber but give them credit they beat everyone on their schedule. And if you really think about it they out played and beat Alabama worse the Florida did. Do they deserve a shot, in a perfect playoff system the would get it but instead we settle for something else.
  • Yeah, Utah could be number 1... so can USC, Texas and the winner of the BCS title game. Every year someone with an argument gets left out. The BCS is like global warming, we're all not happy with what's going on, but nobody will do anything about it. Every national championship should have an asterisk by them.
  • Good point baptuna.
You can only play the teams you schedule and Utah did just that. However, they also took advantage of a very weak Mountain West Conference SOS and a Bama team that somehow got caught up in not thinking they deserved to "just" be in the Sugar Bowl this year. Utah DID want to be in the Sugar Bowl game and showed they deserved the shot at being there. Give then credit but be careful what you wish for if you decide to step up and play with the Big Boy conferences.

I agree the BCS has got to do something in the near future to right the ship and create some sort of playoff system that will separate the men from the boys. Just because you are classified as a Div I team and go undefeated in the regular season doesn't necessarily mean you are BCS worthy.
  • Bigboy conference...Big 12 plays flag football!!! Look at the bowl record......Need to play D
  • Yeah, well I would take my chances with my Horn's defense against Utah any day. That was the topic of this conversation, right?

Utah makes a statement for West Coast football

Friday was a beautiful day for fans of West Coast football, myself included. I have no special connection to Utah. I went to Oregon. I don't even know what a Ute is. But I love the fact that the Utes beat Alabama 31-17 in the Sugar Bowl.Maybe for at least a day or so we can stop hearing about the greatness of the Southeastern Conference, about how much bigger and faster and better...
