All is not fair in Twitter and College Football when you are a high-profile player. Sometimes Twitter brings good news, like if you’re Alabama, who found out their last two most recent commitments were coming to the university through tweets. Announcing your decision to play college ball on Twitter is ‘totes the cool thing to do’ for young athletes today. But it turns out Twitter isn’t just turning heads when it comes to recruiting- especially if you’re Texas A&M. Last week, the Aggies found out Twitter could be the bearer of bad news and controversy. It started on Thursday when A&M Athletic Director, Eric Hyman made a joke to boosters that, like any bad joke, ended up on the internet. “What do the moon and Texas A&M have in common? They both control the Tide.” Come on, what is this, Ohio State? Hyman is most definitely referring to the 29-24 upset that Aggies are still holding on to from last season, their inaugural season in the SEC. Considering Alabama went on to win the National Championship, that is all they have to hold on to. That upset and their Heisman-winning quarterback that is. Speaking of Johnny Football, he found out that Twitter can be evil, and we all found out he hasn’t learned his social media lesson when on Sunday he tweeted, “Bull**** like tonight is a reason why I can’t wait to leave college station… whenever it may be.” Gasp! Many fans thought Manziel learned his lesson when he deleted his entire twitter account months ago in the offseason, but at this point, all Bama fans had to do was sit at their computers, eagerly watching the stream of self-destructing A&M tweets and wonder, ‘what will possibly come next?’ “This is what you get for giving a 19-year-old a Heisman,” Alabama fan Tommy Townsend said, shaking his head as he scrolled through the ridiculous stream of tweets on his computer screen on Sunday. His reaction was no doubt happening 100 times over in dorm rooms, living rooms and computer labs from Tuscaloosa to College Station and beyond. Who knows what type of ‘drama’ caused the QB to make such a mutinous statement but I’m going to guess it was the petty kind. Manziel later tried to ease the situation by sending the classic “damage control” tweet later in the day. “Don’t ever forget that I love A&M with all of my heart, but please please walk a day in my shoes”. Uh, where can I sign up? I get that life in the lime light is hard, and yes I get that all we “little people” could have is sympathy, not empathy for the pressures of being an SEC quarterback. But, still. This, Johnny, was throwing salt in the wound. As I easily sit here, berating the Aggies, a common foe to my Crimson Tide, one scary thought pops into my fan-centric mind. A.J. McCarron and Johnny Manziel are reportedly friends. Friends! No doubt you heard of their beach vacation together right? Oh yeah, I’m not even kidding.  Back in May the two quite openly discussed an upcoming vacay on – you guessed it!- Twitter. So maybe he can give his little beach buddy a little advice. Hint for not having people hate you number 1: Don’t piss off your own fans. It’s all fun and games when it happens to another team (particularly funny when it happens to a team that was getting a little too cocky from one upset) but there are lessons in this little soap opera for all college football fans. Lesson #1: You just can’t keep kids away from Twitter. Trust me, they try at major universities. Lesson #2: Since Twitter allows instant communication to a potential of millions of viewers, that makes it the internet version of reputation russian roulette. Add young athletes to the mix and you’ve got a “I’m untouchable” mix that can spell disaster for any organization. Chances are this will all be forgotten come September, but in the mean time, there are a thousand opportunities for another team to slip up. Let’s pray Nick Saban keeps his usual tight grip on his team… even virtually.
