Texas Tech has enjoyed a rapid return to football relevance under head coach Tommy Tuberville. The former Auburn coach is in his third season as the head coach of the Red Raiders and has a record of 20-15 there, including a 7-3 mark this season. But he may not be in Lubbock much longer. Tuberville is believed to be one of top targets for the soon to be vacant Arkansas head coaching job and, according to rumors, he would love a chance to return to the SEC. After this weekend’s incident with an assistant on the sidelines, maybe Tuberville will see it as time to move on from the Red Raiders. After the unceremonious exit of Bobby Petrino last summer and the incredibly disappointing season the Razorbacks are currently going through, the school will want to make noise with a big-time hire. TCU’s Gary Patterson and Nebraska’s Bo Pelini are believed to be in the running as well. That said, Tuberville is from Arkansas, played safety at Southern Arkansas and has a long history in the SEC. He was the head coach at Ole Miss from 1995 to 1998, then led Auburn from 1999 to 2008. While at Auburn, Tuberville posted a record of 85-40 and boasted a 52-30 mark in the SEC. The Tigers also went undefeated in 2004. While Texas Tech has a solid record this year, the Raiders were 8-5 in 2010 and 5-7 in 2011. In addition to that they have posted a 5-12 record in the Big 12 before this year. So Tuberville hasn’t exactly been tearing things up in Lubbock. But Arkansas would love to get a local guy in charge of the program. Tuberville fits that description, has experience in the SEC and the school could probably convince itself that he would never leave for another job. Don’t be surprised if Tuberville and Arkansas end up making a perfect pair.
