Texas Tech quarterback Baker Mayfield’s incredible story just took a crazy turn. The freshman walk-on who earned the team’s starting job under center has announced that he plans to transfer and enroll at Oklahoma for the spring semester. Texas Tech head coach Kliff Kingsbury seemed shocked by the announcement as it apparently came out of the blue. Mayfield reportedly made the decision after he learned that sophomore Michael Brewer would start the team’s bowl game. The Austin native made national headlines by beating the odds and earning the starting quarterback job at a BCS conference school as a freshman walk-on. He is believed to be the first true freshman, walk-on quarterback to start a season opener for an FBS team. Mayfield saw action in eight games and completed 64.1 percent of his passes for 2,315 yards, with 12 touchdowns and six interceptions. He led the Red Raiders to a 5-0 start before suffering a knee injury that put him out for four games. When he came back, Texas Tech was 7-2, and the team lost it’s final three games to finish the season at 7-5. He was named the 2013 Big 12 Freshman Offensive Player of the Year. Mayfield will likely have to sit out a year and will enter a crowded quarterback group at Oklahoma. The Sooners currently have senior Blake Bell, junior Kendal Thompson, sophomore Trevor Knight, redshirt freshman Cody Thomas and true freshman Justice Hansen (who plans to graduate early from high school and enroll in January) all on scholarship at quarterback. After a prolific career at Lake Travis High School in Austin, Mayfield bosted scholarship offers from Florida Atlantic, Rice and Washington State. He decided to walk-on at Texas Tech to play for Kingsbury, who had just helped develop Johnny Manziel into a Heisman Trophy winner at Texas A&M. This abrupt departure is certainly strange, given the faith Kingsbury showed in Mayfield this season, especially early on. It looks like the next chapter of Baker Mayfield’s story will come as an Oklahoma Sooner.
