Over the course of the past few seasons, the Baylor Bears have been on the verge of finally breaking through and becoming a team to be reckoned with in the Big 12 South.
With the leadership and NFL ability of quarterback Robert Griffin III, this looks like the year it could finally happen– especially with the Texas Longhorns being a shell of their 2005 National Championship selves.
Gordon, a 6’4″, 220 pound athletic receiver caught 42 passes for 714 yards and nine touchdowns in 2010, and promised to be the No. 1 option for Griffin and Art Briles’ offense in 2011.
Last October Gordon was arrested at a Taco Bell near the Baylor campus after marijuana was discovered in a car in which he was riding.
It has been rumored that Gordon may transfer to the University of Utah, but would not be able to suit up for the Utes until 2012 and would lose a year of eligibility by transferring. Utah reportedly also has a very ardent “no-tolerance” stance toward alcohol and drug abuse– present or past — which could make Gordon’s transfer a difficult proposition.
With Gordon’s departure, sophomore Tevin Reese, junior Lanier Simpson, and sophomore Darius Jones will be depended upon to each step up their production and help the Bears’ offense have another dimension beyond the rushing yards certain to be gained by Heisman candidate Griffin.
The Baylor Bears are talented enough now that the loss of Gordon will not be as damaging as it once was– there are plenty of young receivers on the squad that will relish the opportunity to step up and show they can help the team be competitive in 2011.
