Big Ten Football Week Four Review

Week Four Record:  7-3…..Record so far….36-10

Central Michigan-32 Iowa-31…..MISS….Ok…I know I picked Iowa TE CJ Fiedorowicz as an All Big Ten player for this season….but did you see him just Ole’ that onside kick by CMU?….Dude, pick up the ball…under what circumstances would a receiving team member just let the ball go by him on an onside kick…a stunner in Kinnick.

Ohio State-29 UAB-15….CORRECT….I love what Urban Meyer said his teams problems were after this poor performance on Saturday…he said he narrowed it down to “offense, defense and special teams”…you gotta love a coach who puts it all out there…but I think there is also a lot of smoke being blown in Columbus…yes..probably both kinds of smoke..

Wisconsin-37 UTEP-26…CORRECT….The Badgers have benched Maryland transfer QB Danny O’Brien..This Joel Stave guy might be the real thing…he looked solid and he had to be with Montee’ Ball going down…Good thing they had James White…but this Wisconsin team is far from good…opening the door for..pretty much anyone other than PSU and OSU to win the Leaders division.

Michigan State-23 Eastern Michigan-7….CORRECT….The Eagles held the lead until there was about a minute to go in the 3rd quarter…MSU has a lot of work to do…first and foremost, protect your QB…Maxwell was running all over the place…secondly…the WR’s have to catch balls that hit them in the hands…and third..maybe find another guy to carry the ball..La’Veon had 36 carries for 253 yards…the rest of MSU’s backs carried the ball 8 times…

Nebraska-73 Idaho State-7….CORRECT….Rex Burkhead and the Corn destroyed the Bengals (sorry for calling them Tigers in the preview)…Burkhead got 119 yards on 8 carries and scored a career long 61 yard run to lead Nebraska…the Corn led 35-0 at the end of the first quarter…BORING!

Northwestern-38 South Dakota-7….CORRECT….Another Big Ten team engulfing a FCS opponent here in Evanston in front of 10’s of fans…seriously…there was nobody at this game…I bet high schools in Chicago have more people at games…Venric Mark led the Cats with 16 carries for 117 yards and three TD’s….

Penn State-24 Temple-13….CORRECT….The Nittany Lions have beaten the Owls 30 straight times in the series…Matt McGloin, Lion QB, threw for 318 a career high…plus he ran for two scores…which I can tell you…did not make me think of Vince Young at all…Penn State is now 2-2…it will probably be the last time they are at or above .500 for a very long time…

Notre Dame-13 Michigan-6….CORRECT….6 turnovers…5 INT’s and 1 fumble….4 of those INT’s were by Denard Robinson…as much as a lot of the blame should go to Robinson..I also feel that Al Borges should shoulder a lot of it too…his pass first philosophy with a slightly better-than-average passer didn’t work too well…a HB pass from the 10 yard line?…I have never liked that call inside the red zone.

Louisiana Tech-52 Illinois-24….MISS….6 turnovers…and the first three were turned into TD’s for the visiting Bulldogs and they never looked back……Nathan Scheelhaase did indeed play but was not good…he was yanked after the first quarter and never came back….This Illini team is going backwards as far as development goes….and that is never a good sign heading into the conference season…

Minnesota-17 Syracuse-10….MISS….two things occurred on Saturday night that I didn’t think would happen at TCF Bank Field…first, the Gopher defense really won the game for Minnesota…putting the clamps on Syracuse QB Ryan Nassib…holding him to 231 yards and 1 TD with 2 INT’s and a fumble..second, the crowd was actually a factor…probably because you can buy alcohol there…but that is a big time W for the Gophers…nice win.

Video: The Dark Meyer Rises

I am going to assume that Dark Knight Rises parodies are going to make their way around college football, since this is the second one we have come across since last week, with “the Dark Chiz Rises” made the rounds previously. Next up, Urban Meyer, who has returned to coaching with the Ohio State Buckeyes, [...]

Helmet Stickers – Ohio State vs. UAB

Week Four of the college football season, and the entire non-conference portion of the schedule, is now behind us and once again your Empire team is here to pass out a few helmet stickers to deserving Buckeyes. The Bucks had one hell of a time with Alabama-Birmingham, yet somehow moved up two spots in the latest AP Poll in spite of putting only eight second-half points on the...

Monday Morning Optimism: Ohio State vs. UAB

Big Hank had another big game, (Photo by Neal C. Lauron) I started off writing this article each week because it seemed like a fun concept. I wasn’t sure if it was going to stick. Now after four weeks I know that I have to keep putting this out there, if nothing else to be the voice of dissent. I don’t want to get too preachy, and I don’t want to open this column bashing Buckeye...

Urban Meyer post-game presser – Ohio State vs. UAB (video)

A few interesting tidbits, but none more to me than hearing Urban Meyer talk briefly about Rod Smith and Ohio State’s ability to “just line up and settle everybody down and went to a little I-twins, which is kind of what this personnel was built for,” obviously referencing the roster he inherited from the Jim Tressel era of Ohio State football. At one point Meyer was asked...

Ohio State leaps two spots in AP Top-25

Braxton Miller continues to carry the Buckeyes. After a lackluster performance against the Conference USA’s Alabama-Birmingham Blazers, the Ohio State Buckeyes (4-0, 0-0 B1G) have jumped up to fourteenth in the latest Associated Press Top-25. While the Buckeyes are entering conference play with a perfect record through four non-conference games, their trip to East Lansing this...

O$U’s Gordon Gee has some expensive bow ties

When you are the most expensive “CEO” of a public university, it makes sense that you would wear some expensive threads. This is definitely the case with Gordon Gee, the president of Ohio State. The head man for the Buckeyes is known for his outrageous bow ties, and they come at a hefty price according [...]

Miller's TD pushes No. 16 Buckeyes past UAB

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- Braxton Miller ran for two touchdowns and No. 16 Ohio State overcame a lethargic, mistake-filled effort to hold off UAB 29-15 on Saturday in the Buckeyes' final tune-up before Big Ten play. UAB (0-3) more than held its own against the Buckeyes (4-0), who committed drive-killing penalties, had a punt blocked for a touchdown and had trouble scoring against...

Ohio State Football: Braxton Miller emerges as a Heisman favorite in another ugly Buckeyes win

Ask most USC fans, and they’ll tell you that the No. 1 reason Matt Barkley didn’t get an invite to New York last season for the Heisman Trophy ceremony was simply his team was on probation. After all, how could the upstanding voters of such a prestigious award as the Heisman, reward a player whose school had done so much wrong in the eyes of the NCAA? They couldn’t...

What we know about Ohio State football

photo via Jason Bostic; Bostic Imagery If the walls of Ohio Stadium could talk about win number 400 yesterday, oh the things the cement and metal would tell the world about The Ohio State Buckeyes.  One thing is for sure, however: this is not the worst those walls have seen and the coaches are willing to accept that fact and continue to improve. What else have we learned coming...

Ohio State Spent $64K on Bow Ties for University President

The Dayton Daily News has reported that The Ohio State University has spent in excess of $64,000 on “bow ties and related items” since the fall of 2007 on behalf of University President, Gordon Gee. Gee, who was the center of criticism for his handling of the Jim Tressel, Terrelle Pryor fiasco, is known for his trademark bow ties. The newspaper requested various documents from...

Ohio State struggles, then defeats UAB

If you're one of those who were confused, and maybe even a little upset, that Ohio State dropped four spots in the polls after their win last week, you only need to look to their opening series this week to understand why. UAB had the ball first, and on their very first set of downs, Ohio State had them at 3rd & 1. The defense that was called was the right one, as it...

Ohio State stays undefeated despite struggles on both sides of the ball

In spite of themselves, the Buckeyes are still undefeated on the young season. Coach Urban Meyer narrowed the problems to “offense, defense and special teams,” expressed his disappointment and said his players have to get dramatically better before opening Big Ten play at No. 21 Michigan State on Saturday. Despite the lackluster efforts on all three phases, Ohio State still...

Touchdown Tuesday – Ohio State vs. UAB

via 247SPORTS After Saturday’s game against UAB, the Buckeyes may be 4-0 but no one is praising their amazing talent; truth be told, there is A LOT of work that still needs to be done in order for the team to look solid, and everyone in Buckeye Nation knows it. SERIOUSLY…A BLOCKED PUNT? | 9:21 1st The tone for the game against UAB was set quickly, when just under 6 minutes...

Podcast: Urban renewal at Ohio State

Urban Meyer's return to coaching at Ohio State takes center stage this week as his Buckeyes travel to Michigan State in the best match-up of a somewhat unappealing slate of games.
