Brian Kelly Sounds Off On Garrett Nussmeier Injury Rumor

Coming into the 2025 season, LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier was considered one of the best players in the country. So far, he has failed to live up to the hype.

Nussmeier was very productive for the Tigers in 2024, completing 64.2% of his passes for 4,052 yards with 29 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. In five games this season, the senior signal-caller has 1,159 passing yards, seven touchdowns and three interceptions. His struggles were on full display during last Saturday's loss to Ole Miss.

Some fans noticed that Nussmeier looked uncomfortable against the Rebels. That led to rumors about him needing surgery to repair an oblique injury.

On Wednesday afternoon, LSU head coach Brian Kelly addressed the rumors surrounding Nussmeier. He let everyone know that his quarterback isn't about to go under the knife.

However, Nussmeier has been receiving treatment for an ab injury.

"That's misinformation," Kelly told reporters, via LouisianaSports.net. "Those [rumors] are not based on any facts. It’s quite silly, actually. Early on, he had an ab strain, not a core injury in terms of a core injury that we deal with. And it’s been slow to heal."

Kelly also said, "He’ll be the Garrett Nussmeier that he needs to be as we get into the very difficult part of our schedule."

LSU's path to the CFP isn't easy.

Over the next two months, LSU will have to square off against No. 16 Vanderbilt, No. 6 Texas A&M, No. 10 Alabama and No. 5 Oklahoma. That's not an easy slate to say the least.

If LSU is going to make the College Football Playoff, it'll need Nussmeier to recapture the magic from last season that made him an intriguing quarterback prospect.

LSU will enjoy a bye week before taking on South Carolina on Oct. 11.
