On Monday, BYU made the top five for Texas running back prospect Viron Ellison. Ellison narrowed down his list to BYU, Missouri, Cal, Tulsa, and Arkansas State. BYU and running backs coach Harvey Unga extended Ellison a scholarship offer back in May. Ellison also held competing offers from the likes of San Diego State, Colorado State, Toledo, and Texas State. He has plans to announce his college decision on August 27th, the day of the first game of his senior season.

Ellison preps at Lewisville High School in Lewisville, Texas. He is listed at 6'2 and he also plays on defense as an edge/outside linebacker. As a junior, he ran for over 1,500 yards and 15 touchdowns. He also had a sack and multiple quarterback pressures. He was named to the All-District offensive player of the year after the 2022 season.

Ellison is a physical runner that is able to gain tough yards and find the openings at the line of scrimmage. He is a single-cut back that doesn't waste time before getting upfield. If BYU wants to land Ellison's eventual commitment, they will likely need to get him on campus for an official visit first.

BYU has recruited Texas, and specifically running backs from Texas, over the last few recruiting cycles. Last year, BYU signed four-star running back LJ Martin from El Paso, Texas. The Cougars, who will be playing in Texas every year in the Big 12, are trying to bring in more players from the Lone Star State.
