PASADENA, Calif. — Much was made of California's decision to forego flying in favor of taking the bus to its game at UCLA on Saturday. The move was made to save money because of the university's budget squeeze, though the savings doesn't cover a month of coach Jeff Tedford's $1.8 million salary.
But say this about the long drive down I-5 the Bears made on Thursday evening: It proved excellent preparation for their 45-26 victory at the Rose Bowl. The Bears spent the first half driving up and down the field as UCLA's defense resembled orange traffic cones being trampled at rush hour.
Looking nothing like a team that had not scored a touchdown since Sept. 19, the Bears ran off touchdown drives of 93, 91, 80 and 80 yards. And then they played the second half.
