Calvin Johnson explains why chose Georgia Tech over Georgia
Jason Getz-USA TODAY Sports

Georgia is known as the most dominant program on the football recruiting trail by a large margin, but the Bulldogs haven't landed all of their prime targets over the years. And perhaps one of the most notable misses is former NFL Hall of Fame wide receiver Calvin Johnson.

Johnson chose Georgia Tech over Georgia back in 2004, joining the Yellow Jackets over the Bulldogs. He was ranked as the No. 5 wideout in the nation that year out of Sandy Creek High School in Tyrone, Georgia.

He also held multiple offers from other prestigious programs across different conferences, including Miami and Notre Dame.

It's easy to imagine what could have been with Johnson in the fold with the receiving corps in Athens, but that didn't happen largely due to a visit that did not go the best.

"If I would have went anywhere else, I would have gone to UGA," Johnson said when he was asked about how he feels when he reflects back on his decision. "It came down to my visits... I went on my visit to UGA, man... they dropped me off at some spot with some other guy, some younger players, maybe some freshman, I don't know where we got dropped off at."

Johnson says all he knows is that where he was dropped off was somewhere within UGA's large campus.

"I'm just there. We end up going to some crazy ass club... anyways, it was just a bad situation. I'm in a situation where I'm trying to learn if I like this place."

He also noted that he wasn't fond of the dorm situation at the time, which reminded him of "the projects." It's safe to say whoever handled this visit fumble a huge opportunity in a way that seems it could have been easily avoided.

Johnson went on to become a No. 2 overall pick to the Detroit Lions in 2007. named to the Pro Bowl six times in a storied career, leading the NFL in receptions in 2012 and receiving yards in both 2011 and 2012.
