Most frat guys sitting around watching football on a late Saturday afternoon are a few adult beverages into the day.
Luckily, for University of Tennessee student Derrick Brodus, he hadn’t gotten started yet.
After injuries to both of the roster’s kickers during Saturday’s pre-game warm-ups, Tennessee head coach Derek Dooley had quite a predicament.
Enter Derrick Brodus.

Dooley, seeing no other option, called up Brodus’ fraternity house and requested that he get ready as soon as possible and make his way to Neyland Stadium to kick for the Vols.
Needless to say Brodus was stunned at the turn his average Saturday had just taken:
“I was just laying on the couch watching football. Honestly, I didn’t know what was going on.
“I thought it was a dream. I was just laying down on the couch relaxing. I answered the phone and they just told me to come to the stadium as soon as possible.”
While it’s not readily clear how Dooley knew that Brodus could kick, there must have been some history there for him to take a risk with a complete unknown.
Brodus delivered on his opportunity, knocking home all of his three extra point attempts, and even connecting on a 21-yard field goal for good measure.
It’s likely Derrick Brodus won’t have a Saturday this thrilling in a while, but regardless, he has a story to tell that few will believe, but even more will recognize as one of the more bizarre of the 2011 college football season to date.
