With the NFL Draft just over a month away, we’ll start taking a look at some players in the upcoming draft, that we think could be a fit for Gang Green. This is regardless of draft position, as things are semi-unpredictable with trades, etc.  Jason Verrett enters the 2014 NFL Draft having played three seasons for the Texas Christian University (TCU) Horned Frogs. TCU entered the Big 12 conference in 2012, so Verrett saw a higher level of competition in his two most recent seasons (Mountain West Conference, prior). Sizing him up Verrett stands at 5’9″-10″, based on varying records, and weighs about 190 lbs. He’s not a Richard Sherman-sized prospect, and that has been unfairly critiqued in many mock drafts and analyses. See, Verrett plays much bigger than he is. How? The cornerback excels at shadowing his man very closely and demonstrates an impressive leaping ability when the ball comes in close. That takes speed to stay with a WR throughout their route, and Verrett demonstrated that speed at the combine—tying for second place among cornerbacks with a time of 4.38 in the 40-yard dash. His ability to go up and get/swat the football was shown via the combine’s vertical jump, tying for third place (39.0). On The Field Defensive stats can be misleading for most positions, but I will share that Verrett recorded nine INTs during his tenure with the Horned Frogs, and 160 total tackles. Verrett, like former-Jet Darrelle Revis, is much more of a cover-corner and island-creator. Opposing offenses did not look to his man as a first progression option. “I believe I’m the best corner in the draft,” said Verrett in a combine press conference. “I like to model my game after Asante Samuel. I feel like his technique, fluidness, and quick feet kind of match my game.” He seems like a Rex Ryan guy—not afraid to make tackles in the run game, or go after the quarterback off the edge. The Next Step Verrett will be working to get back to 100% for whatever team drafts him, as he underwent surgery to repair a torn labrum that occurred during his last season. That hasn’t warded off interest, though, as Verrett’s draft stock seemingly continues to rise. This includes an invite to the big stage: Got the call to go to NYC for the NFL Draft….Radio City we comin!!! #Blessings — Jason Verrett (@Jfeeva_2) March 29, 2014 He projects to be a late round one pick, or early round two, at the latest. Most scouts see Verrette as the 3rd-5th best cornerback prospect in this year’s class. I see the cornerback as one of the best defensive fits, given a early selection on that side of the ball—along with our next feature: safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix. Feature Image: Associated Press
