Dylan Laube emphasizes importance of catching out of the backfield

Plenty of NFL prospects are in Mobile, Alabama this week trying to impress GMs, scouts, and decision makers. They’ve been going through practices at the 2024 Senior Bowl. Each year there are always a few prospects that float under the radar from Division I-AA schools, that find a way to impress during the week. One player this year who has impressed is New Hampshire running back Dylan Laube. The Wildcats star sat down with Andy Staples to talk about how catching the ball out the backfield has always been a huge piece of his game.

“100 percent. I think I wanted to show my senior year our threats out wide. And our quarterback, too, which is super talented. We wanted to say, hey let’s throw the ball. And I wanted to kind of show, hey, I’m not just a running back because my junior year I ran the ball a lot. And we wanted to say hey let’s put me out wide, the slot, out wide, empty set, just go. And it worked,” Laub said on Thursday night’s show of Andy Staples On3.

Dylan Laube was one of the nation’s best in Division I-AA

One of the most explosive players in Division I-AA, Laube landed on nearly every All-American list imaginable. He earned first team All-American honors from the Associated Press and the American Football Coaches Association.

Dylan Laube put up prolific numbers in Division I-AA this season, leading the nation in all-purpose yards (209.5 yards per game), ranking No. 2 in both total touchdowns (18) and scoring (10.8 points per game), and third in kick returns (31.1 yards per return). Laube also ranked eighth in combined kick return yards (647 yards) and receptions per game (6.8). He finished the season with 2,095 all-purpose yards, firmly cementing his place as one of the nation’s most dynamic all-purpose weapons on that level.

His best season as a runner came in 2022, when he ran for 1,205 yards and 15 touchdowns. This season, Laube finished with 749 yards on the ground and nine touchdowns. For his career, the Wildcats’ star had 556 carries for 2,773 rushing yards and 29 touchdowns.

His best season as a receiver came this year, when he hauled in 68 catches for 699 yards and seven touchdowns. For his career with the Wildcats, Laube finished with 171 catches for 1,791 total receiving yards and 14 touchdowns.

As a kick returner, he certainly made his mark. In his college career, Laube finished with 90 kick returns for 2,207 yards and two touchdowns, averaging 24.5 yards per return for his career.

The 2024 Senior Bowl will be played on Saturday, Feb. 3rd. The game will be televised by NFL Network and is set to begin at 1:00 PM EST.
