With 85 scholarship players on a college football roster, you're not going to keep everyone happy. Guys need to play or else they leave.

And sometimes teams, in this case the University of Washington, just have to wonder if they let someone go out the door who might go and be great?

Recently, a list put together by CFB Focus ranked the top 10 players who transferred from FBS schools to FCS destinations — and the first two were former Huskies in quarterback Sam Huard, at Cal Poly, and tight end Caden Jumper, now with Murray State.

Huard did nothing wrong in Montlake, didn't get hurt and appears to have plenty of passing potential for the college level. Yet he got stuck behind one of the college game's  most productive quarterbacks, Michael Penix Jr., a Heisman Trophy candidate.

What happened here is Kalen DeBoer's staff couldn't wait for the 6-foot-2, 193-pound Huard to develop into a No. 1 signal-caller, and Huard felt he couldn't afford to sit until 2024 with no guarantees of playing time even then. He played in five games for the UW, just one during the 2022 season.

Jumper simply didn't fit the tight-end profile for offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb's Husky offense. He carries a burly 6-foot-3, 253-pound frame. He played in just one game in his two seasons in Montlake.

When he signed him, former UW coach Jimmy Lake enthusiastically described Jumper as potentially another Will Dissly, a physical guy who converted from defensive tackle to tight end with the Huskies and now plays effectively on offense in the NFL for the Seattle Seahawks.

Chances are, Dissly wouldn't have found a prominent role in the Huskies' wide-open passing offense either, simply for style reasons.

Of the UW players who have transferred out since DeBoer's staff came on board, seven have dropped down a level in wide receiver Sawyer Racanelli (Montana), running back Caleb Berry (Incarnate Word), Lonyatta Alexander Jr. (Montana State), running back Jay'Veon Sunday (Abilene Christian), linebacker Demario King (Old Dominion), Jumper and Huard.

On the recent CFB Focus list, Huard and Jumper are joined, in this order, by 3) Incarnate Word quarterback Zach Calzada, who left Auburn; 4) Florida A&M running back Kevin Dean Jr., who transferred from Florida Atlantic; 5) SE Louisiana quarterback Cammon Cooper, who left Hawaii; 6) Houston Christian quarterback Colby Suits, who exited Louisiana-Monroe; 7) Incarnate Word wide receiver Caleb Chapman, who left Texas A&M; 8) Princeton linebacker Tyler Morris, who transferred from Navy; 9) Northern Colorado quarterback Peter Costelli, who left Troy; and 10) Jackson State running back Seven McGee, who transferred from Oregon.

Costelli immediately goes into competition at Northern Colorado with former UW quarterback Jacob Sirmon, who left Jimmy Lake's program, first for FBS Central Michigan before transferring to the FCS school.

As for Huard and Jumper, should they draw that elusive playing time and show off considerable talent, they could end up back at the FBS level someday.
