PLAYERS: Jaylen Watkins

(Photo credit: Kim Klement/US Presswire) The Florida Gators released an updated version of the team’s depth chart this week and there were a few changes. Most notably, senior Jaylen Watkins will take over for redshirt freshman Marcus Maye as one of Florida’s starting safeties. The move is not all that surprising. Maye got beat for a 52-yard touchdown against the Miami Hurricanes that put the Gators in a 14-6 hole that they were unable to climb out of. “You just can’t give up big plays,” head coach Will Muschamp said in a press conference Monday. “We can’t afford that to happen. You’ve gotta tackle better. Marcus knows that.” Watkins is a more than capable replacement. The senior has been a more than solid contributor on Florida’s defense in each of his first three seasons, including recording three interceptions last season. While Maye, 6-foot, 206 pounds, is slightly more physically imposing than Watkins, 6-foot, 188 pounds, Watkins has been a cornerback most of his career and should provide an upgrade in terms of coverage. Other notable changes to the depth chart: Senior Jon Halapio returns to his spot at right guard after missing the first two games of the season with a torn pectoral. Linebacker Antonio Morrison is listed as the starter at middle linebacker for the first time since returning from his suspension. Freshman cornerback Vernon Hargreaves III is listed as the backup at three cornerback positions. After recording two interceptions through two career games, Hargreaves role in the defense looks like it will only get bigger as the season progresses.

Florida Gators vs. Tennessee Volunteers: What to watch for

Gators defense chasing more than lofty rankings

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Gators senior defensive tackle Dominique Easley is not impressed. He is not impressed at Florida leading the SEC and ranking third in the country in total defense, limiting opponents to 208.5 yards per game -- or nearly five football fields fewer than Oregon's offense (687 yards) rolled up against Tennessee. He is not impressed that Florida leads the country...

Rivalry with Vols big for Watkins

Florida meets Tennessee on Saturday in The Swamp, and many players on both teams can’t remember the last time the Gators lost to the Volunteers. Many weren’t following the team they now play for or even interested in college football the last time it happened. With an eight game winning streak on the line, Florida’s Jaylen Watkins is excited for the SEC rivalry and wants to...

Video: Brown knows improvement necessary

Gators running back Mack Brown is unhappy with his performance on Saturday and discusses some things he wants to adjust before they open up SEC action on Saturday. The run game is a big deal with this SEC East rival, as the Gators hold an eight game edge on the Vols.

Halapio ready to return Saturday

Jon Halapio isn’t used to the sidelines. The redshirt senior has played in 41 games and started 33 during his first three years on the field for Florida. Sitting out the first two games of this season -- especially having to watch a loss -- because of a pectoral injury was tough. Halapio returned to practice last week and will be back with the Florida offensive line on Saturday...
