Florida State fires coach Willie Taggart after 4-5 record this season

Willie Taggart was the man Florida State trusted to keep the Seminoles in national championship contention after Jimbo Fisher resigned, but the university apparently feels he has not done a good enough job in the less than two years he has been with the team.

Florida State announced on Sunday that Taggart has been relieved of his duties as head football coach. He will be replaced in the interim by defensive line coach Odell Haggins.

Taggart, who made a name for himself at South Florida and Oregon, finishes with a record of 9-12 at Florida State. The Seminoles went 5-7 last year and were not bowl-eligible, and they are trending in the same direction this season with a 4-5 record.

Less than two seasons hardly seems like enough time to prove your worth to a college program, but it’s possible FSU could have a specific coach in mind as Taggart’s replacement.

Taggart, 43, has an overall record of 56-62 as a head coach. He was with South Florida for four seasons before heading to Oregon, where he coached just one season and left to take the FSU job.
