Jameis Winston will be Florida State’s opening day starter in 2013. (Photo: Stacy Revere/Getty Images) We now know that when Florida State faces Pittsburgh in its season opener on Labor Day night, the man taking the first snap for the Seminoles will be redshirt freshman Jameis Winston. On Friday, Winston was named the starting quarterback for the upcoming season beating out redshirt sophomore Jacob Coker. Winston became the favorite to win the job after a stellar 12-for-15 performance with 205 yards passing and two touchdowns in Florida State’s spring game. The battle for the job became a two-man race after redshirt junior and son of offensive line coach Rick Trickett, Clint Trickett, transferred to West Virginia following the spring practice. Both Winston and Coker played well in the FSU spring game, both are dual-threat quarterbacks and both happen to be from Alabama, but only one could be the team’s starter and that guy was Winston. Winston, a Hueytown native, was the top quarterback of the 2012 recruiting class when he signed with the Seminoles. Winston is a two-sport athlete at Florida State as he also pitches and plays the outfield for the Seminoles’ baseball team. Florida State fans are hopeful that Winston can have a career reminiscent of another two-sport star, 1993 Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback, Charlie Ward. Winston will become the first freshman to make an opening day start at Florida State under head coach Jimbo Fisher and the first for the school since Drew Weatherford started against Miami, also on Labor Day, in 2005. Coker will be Winston’s backup while redshirt freshman Sean Maguire will begin the year third on the Florida State depth chart. Florida State look to win their fourth straight season opener on Labor Day in what will be the beginning of the Jameis Winston era.
