Last weekend, following Iowa’s narrow 20-13 victory over the Iowa State Cyclones, former Michigan football quarterback Cade McNamara had a chance to address the media. McNamara — who was once a Big Ten title-winning QB and a team captain for the Wolverines — said that he wasn’t used to his defense being able to score points (Iowa won due to a defensive touchdown). These post-game comments have stirred up a mixed reaction, including some social media backlash, following the Week 2 win.
Former Michigan football quarterback stirs up mixed reaction, some backlash, with post-game Iowa comments
After leading the Wolverines to a Big Ten title and College Football Playoff berth in 2021, former Michigan football quarterback Cade McNamara was replaced as the starting QB. McNamara lost the job in Week 2 of the 2022 season to JJ McCarthy, who has been stellar so far this year and led the Maize and Blue to another Big Ten title and CFP appearance last fall.
Following last weekend’s win, Cade McNamara said this about his defense:
“You know, them (the defense) scoring points is like — I guess it’s normal around here (Iowa) — but I’m just not used to a defense scoring points,” the ex-Michigan football captain said. “And for (Iowa), that’s normal, and I think that’s awesome.”
Now, to be clear, this was not really a shot at Michigan football as much as it was praise for the Iowa defense. That said, it’s not entirely accurate, either — many times during McNamara’s tenure in Ann Arbor did the defense put points on the board.
After seeing this statement from Cade McNamara, some members of the Michigan fanbase took to Twitter (now known as ‘X’) to point out its inaccuracy and express some resentment. Here are a few of the top social media reactions:
Sigh.

That’s because he’s so much of a bum that can’t score points he needs his defense to score In order to win a game.
