Former Notre Dame Fighting Irish 4-Star Prospect Expected to Land with Cal Golden Bears – Report

A former high-end recruit, Merriweather entered the transfer portal in early December. However, he was not the first Fighting Irish player to announce his intention to transfer, with defensive end NaNa Osafo-Mensah, fellow wideout Chris Tyree, and offensive lineman Zeke Correll beating him to the punch. 

Tobias Merriweather: Short Stint with Notre Dame Football

Merriweather, the 14th overall receiver prospect in the class of 2022, spent the past two seasons playing for the Notre Dame football program. He saw limited action as a true freshman, catching just one pass. However, he made the most out of his opportunities, taking his one reception for 41 yards and a touchdown against the Stanford Cardinal. 

The lengthy six-foot-four receiver stepped into a more significant role in 2023 with the departure of fellow wideouts Lorenzo Styles Jr. and Braden Lenzy, among others. Merriweather played in 12 games this season, snagging 14 passes for 284 yards and two scores. The Washington native owned a team-high 20.3 yards per reception. His best game of the season came against Central Michigan in mid-September, tallying three receptions for 91 yards and a score. 

Notre Dame Fighting Irish: Mass Exodus at the Wide Receiver Position

The Fighting Irish dismissed Chansi Stuckey in late November, ending his two-year run as the wide receivers coach with the program. The fallout included a multitude of Fighting Irish wideouts entering the portal. Alongside Tobias Merriweather, fellow pass catchers Rico Flores Jr., Braylon James, and Chris Tyree joined the transfer portal. Flores Jr. will head to UCLA after 27 receptions as a freshman last season, while James will go to TCU. Meanwhile, Tyree leaves behind an illustrious career with Notre Dame, recording 2,106 scrimmage yards and 15 scores across four seasons. He will play with the Virginia Cavaliers next fall.
