After a heartbreaking loss to Vanderbilt a few short weeks ago, the Georgia Bulldogs’ season seemed all but over. A record of 4-3 overall–and 3-2 in the SEC–had some fans wondering if the Bulldogs even had a shot at a bowl this year, much less the SEC Championship they were destined to reach before the season started.
Yet with three games remaining, the Bulldogs’ dream of winning an SEC title is not yet dead. If 25th ranked Georgia can pull off an upset of a rising Auburn this Saturday, QB Aaron Murray might still have a shot at going out on top. For a team that has been renewed and refreshed by the returns of Todd Gurley and Michael Bennett, it’s fair to be optimistic about games against lowly Kentucky and rival Georgia Tech.
But in order to realize their dream of going to the SEC title game, the Bulldogs will need considerable help from upstart Missouri. With Missouri owning the tiebreaker over Georgia, they’ll have to lose their last two games of the season to be eclipsed by the Bulldogs. There is no doubt that these tests will be legitimate–Ole Miss and Texas A&M have both proven themselves to be more than worthy opponents.
Yet while it still remains a long shot that Georgia will return to the SEC title game, it must be encouraging for this battered squad to know that they’re not out of it yet. A prime time match-up with a team that they’ve beat six times in their past seven chances offers an opportunity to keep their hopes up for one more Saturday. For a team that has been through so many hardships and injuries, a little hope can’t hurt.

With Mark Richt at the helm and Todd Gurley back with a vengeance, anything is possible. But regardless of how Missouri finishes out the season, we’ll learn a lot about the character of this Georgia team over the next few weeks. It has been a season of exceedingly difficult trials and tribulations–of injury horror stories and incredibly disheartening losses. Yet with three games remaining, Georgia can still return to prominence. Here’s to hope, perseverance and effort shining through at Auburn this Saturday.
