Heisman Trophy odds for the 2023 college football season

It's never too early to talk about Heisman Trophy favorites — even before the season starts. Here's a list of player odds for the 2023 Heisman Trophy, courtesy of FanDuel, and current at the time of publication.

1 of 21

Blake Corum, Running Back, Michigan (+5000)

Blake Corum, Running Back, Michigan (+5000)
Kirthmon F. Dozier/USA TODAY NETWORK

One of two non-quarterbacks to earn decent Heisman betting odds, at least according to FanDuel. As reported by USA Today's Wolverines Wire, Corum is "feeling stronger than ever" following that serious knee injury suffered against Illinois on Nov. 19. He played a bit of the Ohio State game, then nothing more in 2022. Corum, though, is poised to make a grand return this season. Even with the injury, Corum rushed for 1,463 yards and 18 touchdowns, while averaging nearly 6 yards per carry, in 2022. Obviously, health will be at the forefront for Corum as Michigan eyes a third straight trip to the College Football Playoff.

KJ Jefferson, Quarterback, Arkansas (+5000)

KJ Jefferson, Quarterback, Arkansas (+5000)
Denny Medley/USA TODAY Sports

When it comes to nationally undervalued talent, Jefferson would be near the top of such list. Now, is he a serious Heisman candidate? Obviously not at the moment, but he is a stud of a player and a leader. Among returning SEC quarterbacks over the past two seasons, nobody has compiled a better passer rating than Jefferson's 164.9. During the 2021 and '22 seasons, Jefferson threw for 5,324 yards, while completing 67.7 percent of his passes, and 45 touchdowns with nine interceptions. He also rushed for 1,304 yards and 15 touchdowns for the Razorbacks, who went 16-8 and won consecutive bowl games the last two years.

3 of 21

Jalen Milroe, Quarterback, Alabama (+5000)

Jalen Milroe, Quarterback, Alabama (+5000)
Butch Dill/USA TODAY Sports

As of the first full week of August, Milroe was still in competition with Ty Simpson and Notre Dame transfer Tyler Buchner for the Crimson Tide starting quarterback job. In terms of the favorite, that depends on who is doing the talking. These odds apparently like Milroe in the preseason to replace Bryce Young. That said, Milroe's body of work at the college level is not too extensive (34-of-60 338 passing yards, six touchdowns, three interceptions and 322 rushing yards in 12 games over two seasons), but one can't deny his potential.

4 of 21

Spencer Rattler, Quarterback, South Carolina (+5000)

Spencer Rattler, Quarterback, South Carolina (+5000)
Jeff Blake/USA TODAY Sports

There was a time not too long ago when Rattler was a Heisman favorite at Oklahoma. However, things didn't work out with the Sooners, but Rattler (more than 7,621 passing yards and 58 touchdowns in 36 career college games) seems content at South Carolina. During his first season at South Carolina in 2022, Rattler helped the Gamecocks to eight wins, while throwing for 3,026 yards and 18 touchdowns. Now, he threw a career-high 12 interceptions last season as well, so Rattler still has his issues under center.

5 of 21

Dillon Gabriel, Quarterback, Oklahoma (+4000)

Dillon Gabriel, Quarterback, Oklahoma (+4000)
Nathan Ray Seebeck/USA TODAY Sports

Speaking of Oklahoma quarterbacks, Gabriel was far from perfect during the Sooners' dismal 6-7 season from 2022, which happened to be his first with the program, though he actually was one of the bright spots. For the third time, Gabriel threw for more than 3,100 yards (3,163), and recorded 25 touchdowns to just six interceptions. Including his days at UCF, Gabriel has thrown for 11,200 yards and completed 61.2 percent of his passes, with 95 touchdowns and 20 interceptions spanning 38 games. Now, if Oklahoma can turn things around in 2023, with Gabriel leading the way, his Heisman stock could rise.

6 of 21

Conner Weigman, Quarterback, Texas A&M (+4000)

Conner Weigman, Quarterback, Texas A&M (+4000)
Maria Lysaker/USA TODAY Sports

Most signs point to the sophomore Weigman leading the Aggies under center this season ahead of senior Max Johnson. He has just five games of college experience, but he threw for 896 yards with eight touchdowns and no interceptions in those contests. However, he only completed 55.3 percent of his passes. But as fall camp progresses, Texas A&M coaches like the confidence and poise that Weigman has shown entering the 2023 campaign. Now, if Weigman remains the man for the job, we'll see if that all remains the case during stops at Miami, Tennessee, Ole Miss and LSU.

Marvin Harrison Jr., Wide Receiver, Ohio State (+3000)

Marvin Harrison Jr., Wide Receiver, Ohio State (+3000)
Dale Zanine/USA TODAY Sports

Fans of the college game got a glimpse of what Harrison could do during a modest 2021 effort. However, he took his game to another level in 2022, ranking fourth in the country in receiving touchdowns (14), sixth in receiving yards (1,263), eighth in average yards per game (97.2) and 18th in receptions (77). In 2022, Harrison also became Ohio State's first unanimous All-American wide receiver, and was a finalist for the Biletnikoff Award. Of course, teammate Emeka Egbuka is also among the elite skill players in the country, but we think Harrison's Heisman odds will improve as the season progresses.

8 of 21

Joe Milton, Quarterback, Tennessee (+2500)

Joe Milton, Quarterback, Tennessee (+2500)
Saul Young/News Sentinel/USA TODAY NETWORK

If there's a preseason Heisman darkhorse, Milton could be that guy. This is Milton's sixth season of college football, but he's only thrown for 2,540 yards with 17 touchdowns and six interceptions during 30 career games at Michigan and Tennessee. He threw for 251 yards and three touchdowns to help beat Clemson in the Orange Bowl last season in place of the injured Hendon Hooker. That performance, and Milton's growing confidence and experience has folks on Rocky Top believing this 2023 squad can challenge for an SEC title — and perhaps more.

Drew Allar, Quarterback, Penn State (+2500)

Drew Allar, Quarterback, Penn State (+2500)
Rich Janzaruk/Herald-Times/USA TODAY NETWORK

Yes, Sean Clifford has left Penn State. Hard to imagine, right? Well, it's next man up, and Allar is the guy at quarterback for the Nittany Lions, who might be the "it" team for 2023. In fact, Action Network columnist Tanner McGrath already predicted that Allar will win the Heisman Trophy this season. That seems like a pretty bold statement considering Allar's completed 35 of 60 passes for 344 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions in 10 career college games. Then again, Allar seems like a bargain at these current odds.

10 of 21

Kyle McCord, Quarterback, Ohio State (+1800)

Kyle McCord, Quarterback, Ohio State (+1800)
Joseph Maiorana/USA TODAY Sports

As of the first full week of August, McCord had not even officially won Ohio State's quarterback battle with Devin Brown. However, McCord has the most game experience in an Ohio State uniform than any other quarterback at the moment. That totals parts of just 12 games over two seasons, where McCord went 41-of-58 for 606 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions, Still, there seems to be a plug-and-play notion when it comes to Ohio State quarterbacks. The system and skill-position talent pool within the Buckeyes offense gives just about any quarterback an opportunity to shine; McCord seems destined to follow that formula.

11 of 21

Sam Hartman, Quarterback, Notre Dame (+1800)

Sam Hartman, Quarterback, Notre Dame (+1800)
John Mersits/USA TODAY NETWORK

One of the most notable transfer moves of the offseason was Hartman ending his massively successful time at Wake Forest and trying for some big-time glory at Notre Dame. Whether that makes the Irish good enough to seriously contend for a spot in the College Football Playoff remains to be seen. However, there's a real chance Hartman's Heisman hopes might be at an all-time high. According to STATS Perform, since 2018, no active player has thrown for more yards than Hartman's 12,967 — or thrown more touchdowns (110) — spanning 48 career games.

12 of 21

Carson Beck, Quarterback, Georgia (+1800)

Carson Beck, Quarterback, Georgia (+1800)
Rich Janzaruk/Herald-Times/USA TODAY NETWORK

Like others on this list, Beck, as of early August, still had not been officially been named starting quarterback. Yet, if the job of running the offense for the two-time reigning national champions came down solely to confidence, Beck would be the run-away winner. Replacing Stetson Bennett won't be easy, though, and Beck has just eight appearances in college under his belt spanning the last two seasons. He completed 36-of-58 passes for 486 yards with six touchdowns and two interceptions without being sacked in those contests.

13 of 21

Drake Maye, Quarterback, North Carolina (+1800)

Drake Maye, Quarterback, North Carolina (+1800)
Bob Donnan/USA TODAY Sports

Maye was named ACC Preseason Player of the Year, which is hardly surprising considering he's the reigning ACC Player of the Year. Maye earned that honor in 2022 when he ranked fourth in the nation with 4,321 passing yards. He also threw 38 touchdowns up against just seven interceptions. Showing that he's a versatile athlete, Maye also rushed for 698 yards and seven touchdowns. All that came during his first full season as a starter for the Tar Heels, who should again boast one of college football's most potent offenses, thus possibly boosting Maye's Heisman chances in the process.

14 of 21

Bo Nix, Quarterback, Oregon (+1800)

Bo Nix, Quarterback, Oregon (+1800)
Soobum Im/USA TODAY Sports

Things didn't work out as planned at Auburn for Nix, who threw just 39 touchdowns in his three seasons with the Tigers. However, after taking his act to Oregon last season, Nix was one of the better success stories in college football. Showing off his overall athletic ability, Nix set career highs for passing attempts (409), completions (294), touchdowns (29) and passer rating (165.7), not to mention he posted personal bests on the ground with 510 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns. Last season not only provided a resurgence to Nix's collegiate career, but redemption against those naysayers believing he couldn't play at an elite level.

15 of 21

J.J. McCarthy, Quarterback, Michigan (+1800)

J.J. McCarthy, Quarterback, Michigan (+1800)
Alex Martin/Journal and Courier/USA TODAY NETWORK

In his first full season as a starter in 2022, McCarthy threw for 2,719 yards with 22 touchdowns and five interceptions. He also ran for 306 yards and five more scores, all while leading Michigan to a second straight Big Ten title and College Football Playoff appearance. So, with high expectations surrounding the Michigan program, McCarthy draws decent Heisman odds. However, his main focus is to get the Wolverines over the hump, and into the national championship game. If that ends up being the case, McCarthy's personal accolades would likely come.

16 of 21

Michael Penix Jr., Quarterback, Washington (+1600)

Michael Penix Jr., Quarterback, Washington (+1600)
James Snook/USA TODAY Sports

Two ACL tears and other injuries kept Penix from being a true star at Indiana. However, he made the most of his return to action with Washington in 2022. Penix ranked among national leaders in passing yards (4,641) and completions (362), while also throwing for 31 touchdowns and being sacked just eight times. If Penix can stay healthy, the Huskies are a legitimate Pac-12 title contender. If that turns out to be the case, and Washington even finds itself in the mix for a College Football Playoff berth, Penix could be in the mix for the Heisman Trophy.

Cade Klubnik, Quarterback, Clemson (+1400)

Cade Klubnik, Quarterback, Clemson (+1400)
Jasen Vinlove/USA TODAY Sports

If Clemson is to be a serious national championship contender in 2023, much will depend on the progression of Klubnik. The much-hyped recruit was roughed up by Tennessee in the Orange Bowl last season during his first career start. Including that contest, Klubnik's college resume adds up to a mere 697 passing yards, while going 61-of-100 with two touchdowns and three interceptions, in a span of just 10 games from 2022. Yes, the sample size is small. However, Klubnik is working with new offensive coordinator Garrett Riley, who served in the same capacity at TCU, and both have a chance to progress together on this new journey.

Quinn Ewers, Quarterback, Texas (+1200)

Quinn Ewers, Quarterback, Texas (+1200)
Jay Biggerstaff/USA TODAY Sports

Yes, Arch Manning has the potential to be a superstar for the Longhorns — but not at the moment. The present belongs to Ewers, the former highly praised high school prospect, who left Ohio State and then threw for 2,177 yards with 15 touchdowns and six interceptions in 10 games last season for Texas. Judging by reports, coaches, teammates and the Longhorns faithful like what they've seen so far from a confident and eager Ewers, who has apparently benefited from the hype and attention on Manning to elevate his focus and determination to keep his starting role, while trying to lead Texas back to national prominence.

19 of 21

Jordan Travis, Quarterback, Florida State (+1200)

Jordan Travis, Quarterback, Florida State (+1200)
Sam Navarro/USA TODAY Sports

It took some time — and two different stops — for Travis to live up to his hype out of high school. His up-and-down college career began at Louisville and then took him to Florida State. After throwing for 1,539 yards and 15 touchdowns in 2021, Travis finally broke out while recording 3,214 yards with 24 touchdowns and just five interceptions in 2022. In the process, last season he helped Florida State go 10-3 to post its first winning season since 2017. The Seminoles have high expectations for 2023, and Travis must lead the way.

20 of 21

Jayden Daniels, Quarterback, LSU (+1000)

Jayden Daniels, Quarterback, LSU (+1000)
John David Mercer/USA TODAY Sports

It's somewhat of a surprise that Daniels is liked this much by at least one betting site in terms of Heisman love. The versatile Daniels (2,913 passing yards, 17 touchdowns, 885 rushing yards, 11 rushing TDs in 2022) made a big splash during his first season in Baton Rouge after three at Arizona State. He helped the Tigers to 10 wins, which culminated in that big win at home over Alabama at home, and eventually claimed the SEC East crown. In 2023, it appears nothing less than a national championship run will be acceptable for LSU, but that will depend on Daniels' ability to keep the resurgence coming.

Caleb Williams, Quarterback, USC (+500)

Caleb Williams, Quarterback, USC (+500)
Gary A. Vasquez/USA TODAY Sports

To no surprise, Williams enters this season the favorite to repeat as the Heisman Trophy winner. Archie Griffin remains the only two-time winner of the Heisman Trophy (1974-75). Is this the season that he'll have some company? Perhaps. Even if Williams has another banner campaign, it might be hard to top his performance from 2022, when he recorded 4,537 passing yards and 42 touchdowns with just five interceptions. Williams also ran for 382 yards and 10 touchdowns. That just piles the pressure on Williams for 2023, who is again tasked with trying to get the talented Trojans into the College Football Playoff.
