Huard Subjected to Lopsided Loss in Second Cal Poly Outing

Sam Huard, the former University of Washington quarterback, got a reality check in his second outing with his new football team when the Cal Poly Mustangs were crushed 59-3 by the San Jose State Spartans on Saturday in San Jose.

It was the Big Sky against the Mountain West and there were no survivors.

Huard, after a fairly productive debut against San Diego the week before, couldn't get much going on the home turf of a San Jose State team that had opened with lopsided losses to USC (56-28) and Oregon State (42-17). 

With a crowd of 14,224 on hand, the lefty quarterback completed 11 of 17 passes for 66 yards and threw an interception, with Poly (1-1) generating just 169 yards of total offense and a third-quarter field goal. The Mustangs turned the ball over three times in the first quarter alone. 

"We just studied Huard all week and studied their offense," Spartans cornerback Jalen Bainer said, "and we had a great, dominating game."

Trailing 24-0 in the second quarter, Huard and Co. had the further indignity of having to sit out a lightning storm passing through the area, forced to go inside for 45 minutes.

The sophomore from Bellevue, Washington, and his teammates will try to regroup next weekend with a home game in San Luis Obispo against Liberty, an FBS team (2-0) from Conference USA and Lynchburg, Virginia. 

In two outings, Huard has completed 35 of 59 passes for 430 yards and a touchdown.
